Kelantan police are seeing more cases where people are being blackmailed with explicit videos, and it’s becoming a serious concern.
State police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said many victims are keeping quiet out of embarrassment, even though the number of cases is clearly rising.
“However, not all victims are willing to lodge a police report as they feel embarrassed,” he said.
Casual chats turn into threats
According to him, the usual trick is pretty straightforward, the suspect records sexual content, either videos or voice chats involving the victim, and then uses it to threaten them.
Victims who are brave enough do go to the police, but many stay silent and end up giving in to the blackmailer’s demands.
All reported cases are being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code, which deals with extortion.
Mohd Yusoff urged anyone who’s been targeted to come forward and file a report.
