Father Mother Sister Brother Ending Explained And Movie Recap
7 hours ago
Any time I come across a movie about family, I brace myself for a while before clicking play. Now, the genre isn’t necessarily about generational trauma and abuse all the time, and it’s unfair to project your own issues onto the people you see on screen. Take the 2023 film “His Three Daughters” for example, where three sisters come together to see their ailing father and get past their issues with each other through communication, no matter how uncomfortable it was in the beginning. Jim Jarmusch’s anthology drama “Father Mother Sister Brother” is less about the intense dynamic between family members, and more about the subtle differences we usually have within our families. I really haven’t seen many families where parents and children actually know each other, and communication gap is a very normalized thing, it always has been. Jarmusch’s film slowly explores how subtly we become secretive to people we share blood with, and we seldom try to fix it or talk about it in a productive manner. But at the end of it all, we can’t really live without our families, and no matter how much our relationships change and shift over time, they remain the only permanent thing in most of our lives.
Spoilers Ahead
What happens in “The Father?”Jeff and Emily are siblings in their middle age, as they drive through the snowy countryside to go see their father. Neither of them really keeps in touch with each other, and Jeff has to ask Emily about the age of her kid. Emily, too, isn’t much bothered about her brother’s life, and the fact that his marriage is in shambles doesn’t affect her much. Their father lives alone, he has no social security, and Emily wonders how he manages to survive without any money. Jeff tells her that he’s sent him money from time to time, sometimes for basic needs, and sometimes to fix up the house, which is apparently falling apart. When they finally arrive at their father’s house, the first thing they see is that the pickup truck is totaled, and there’s no way the vehicle is usable. We do see the father covering up his nice couch with sheets, and hiding his nice furniture. Jeff has also brought a lot of expensive groceries for his dad, starting from exotic dips and sauces to some quality pasta. The father thanks both his kids for the gift basket, but Emily is more than happy to give the credit to Jeff. The kids don’t have much to talk about either, and the Father is as awkward as you imagine. All he can offer them is a glass of water, and he’s completely oblivious about Jeff and Emily’s lives. But he is acting suspicious nonetheless, as we see Emily spotting a Rolex on his wrist. He claims that one of his friends made this knockoff for him, but it’s not that great. However, when Jeff asks to see the wall that apparently crumbled and he needed money to repair, the father stops him from checking up on that too. He claims that he feels like spending more time with them, and he doesn’t need Jeff to get worked up over these things. You can tell he’s lying throughout, since he actually doesn’t have much to talk about with them. The only good thing about the house is the view from the sitting area, which both the kids soak in, taking turns. When Jeff and Emily finally leave, they don’t really know what to make of this visit, and they really are just perplexed and confused. Jeff gave his father some more cash before leaving, and we finally see the true face of the man. He’s not a frail old guy somehow living, but a dashing man in a new, flawless suit. He cleans up the living room and we see the brand new couch. He also calls up his girlfriend to meet him for dinner, as he’s found some “unexpected cash.” In the last scene of this short, the father reveals his new and sound car from the backyard, as he drives off to meet his girlfriend for dinner. So he was never really struggling, and he actually has managed to keep his sanity and life okay. But the man clearly doesn’t want to work more, so he manipulates his kids, especially Jeff, to get money from time to time so that he can splurge as he wishes to.
Why does Lilith lie in “The Mother?”From a loser father to a successful mother, the second story takes us to Dublin, where the mother is waiting for her two daughters for their annual tea party. She isn’t all that excited to see them, and you can tell that she’s old money and her daughters aren’t really that high up on her list of priorities. The elder daughter, Timothea, is calm and composed, but her car breaks down on the way to her mother’s house, Meanwhile, the younger daughter, Lilith, is quite the opposite. She’s an influencer who is suffering from severe financial struggles, so she asks her friend to drop her at her mother’s house, pretending that she came in an Uber. Timothea manages to start her car and get to the destination, but when the sisters do arrive at their mum’s, the conversation is drier than the Sahara desert. Both of them can’t get over how nice the house looks, and Lilith’s designer clothes. The tea is served, and the mother finally asks her daughters about the latest updates on their lives. Timothea has big news to share, as she has been put in charge of the City Council to preserve the historical buildings. Now what do you say to beat that? Well, Lilith also reveals that her community of influencers are also going through a great patch. Both the mother and Timothea don’t have a single clue what she’s on about, but they let it slide after they see the Rolex Lilith is wearing. Just like the Father in the last story, Lilith insists that it’s a cheap replica, and she can’t believe how good the fakes have gotten. The mother doesn’t really care enough to push the conversation further, whereas we see Timothea having a full blown emotional breakdown in the washroom. The distance between her and her mother, and the kind of relationship they have built over the years, has clearly taken a toll on her. The sisters finally leave, and Lilith lies about her phone not working great, so the mother books her a cab. So just like that, another annual meeting of this family is over, with each one of them not telling the other about what’s actually going on in their lives.
Were Skye and Billy’s parents illegals in “Sister Brother?”After their parents’ deaths, Billy and Skye, the brother and sister, reunite after a long time to go see their childhood home. They’ve spent quite a while living separately, but the distance hasn’t ruined their relationship as much as we’ve seen in the earlier stories. The two talk about their childhood, the shared memories, both the good and the bad. When they finally reach the apartment they used to live in, the emptiness inside is pretty depressing. Skye and Billy start looking through the apartment to find their old pictures, everything they used to draw as little kids, kept carefully. Their parents cherished the kids, and they made sure to keep each of their memories safe and sound, what can be better than that? But the recurring theme between these films returns once again, when they find an old Rolex, a knockoff, once again. The watch belonged to their father, but that’s not the only fake thing their parents had in the apartment. When they discover their marriage certificate, upon close inspection, it turns out to be a fake. I cannot stress enough how much I love this dead couple who raised a couple of good kids, didn’t actually marry each other, but chose to live their lives the best way they could. An old lady, who’s the landlord, appears to tell the siblings that she had to tussle with the insurance company’s agents to stop them from taking the belongings, despite the fact they didn’t pay rent for the last few months. So judging by it all, it seems quite possible that Billy and Skye’s parents were undocumented at the time of their “marriage,” but that didn’t stop them from making sure that they gave their kids a good life. In the end of this short film, the siblings end up in a warehouse to look through the furniture that they left behind. Both of them decide to not take anything, but take a good look at what their life was like when they were young, when their parents were alive, and it only seems like a fitting goodbye to such a normal and healthy dynamic between parents and kids, a very rare thing, even in fiction.
