Jln Stephen Yong shooting: Traffic cop claims trial to murder charge

KUCHING, July 18: A traffic police officer pleaded not guilty in the High Court here today to a charge of murdering a man in a shooting incident that occurred at Jalan Stephen Yong in April this year.
The accused, Genesis Nitchell David Reddy, was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the mandatory death penalty, or if not sentenced to death, 30 to 40 years’ imprisonment and no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
He is accused of fatally shooting 34-year-old Muhammad Zaki Iderus at Jalan Stephen Yong in Kuching on April 26, 2025.
The charge was read before Judicial Commissioner Dato Faridz Gohim Abdullah, and Genesis entered a plea of not guilty.
The court fixed August 22, 2025, for the next mention and ordered that Genesis be held on remand at Puncak Borneo Prison pending further proceedings.
The prosecution is led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Jean Siow Chung Hwei, while Russell Lim and Brandon Ting represent the accused under the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK).
The case drew public attention in the early hours of April 26, when two men arrived at the Batu Kawa Police Station around 5.30am to report that the deceased, who was their friend, had been shot while inside a car.
Responding officers later found the victim with a gunshot wound to the head, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. — DayakDaily
