KUCHING, July 18: Sarawak Microelectronic Design (SMD) Semiconductor is set to host the Sarawak Semiconductor Syndication Session on July 21in Kuching, an event poised to fuel Sarawak’s journey toward becoming the Silicon Nerve Centre of Asia.
The pivotal one-day session will convene over 40 key stakeholders, including Federal and State Ministries, government agencies, local universities, training institutions, and industry leaders, to translate Sarawak’s semiconductor ambitions into concrete action.
This strategic session builds upon the momentum of the Sarawak Semiconductor Strategic Framework and the Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap 2030: Beyond Moore’s Law, which was launched by the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at CSA Catapult in Wales on April 29 this year.
Jointly organised by SMD together with the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) and the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED), the initiative will focus on implementing targeted, measurable initiatives to foster a complete semiconductor ecosystem in Sarawak by 2030.
SMD chief executive officer, Shariman Jamil, will spearhead the session with an exclusive presentation on the Roadmap’s ten strategic pillars to transform Sarawak’s semiconductor sector, focusing on high-value job creation, industrial innovation, and economic resilience.
“This bottom-up approach has been our longstanding practice, ensuring our framework truly reflects industry needs – locally and globally – and unlocks opportunities for Sarawakians.
“This syndication will turn vision into reality, fuelling Sarawak’s journey toward becoming the Silicon Nerve Centre of Asia. It’s not just ambition. It’s happening — and we want everyone to be part of it,” he said in a media release today.
Participants will also gain insights into the Malaysia National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS) through a session by Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology (CREST).
Adding to the programme, SMD’s chief financial officer, Shahril Anas, will present perspectives on private funding and venture capital opportunities to strengthen Sarawak’s high-tech financing landscape.
The session will further feature a keynote by Sean Redmond, managing partner of Silicon Catalyst UK, who will provide perspectives on the UK’s semiconductor ecosystem. Joining him will be representatives from the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), enhancing international collaboration potential.
Critical focus areas will include rapidly growing segments such as chip design, research and development (R&D), and advanced packaging, which are sectors anticipated to drive high-income job creation and anchor Sarawak’s long-term economic growth.
Participants are expected to collectively formulate coordinated strategies that align Sarawak’s efforts with national objectives under the NSS, as well as international market demands. The session’s key outcomes and strategic recommendations will be formally presented to Abang Johari to further refine Sarawak’s Semiconductor Strategic Framework.
“This syndication is more than just a meeting—it’s a defining moment to empower the next generation of homegrown talent, cement Sarawak’s role as a sustainable semiconductor powerhouse, and drive high-value job creation for long-term economic strength,” Shariman stressed. — DayakDaily
