Netflix’s Office Romance Cast And Characters Guide

Written by Brett Goldstein and Joe Kelly, Netflix’s latest rom-com, “Office Romance” follows the dreary, uninspired workspace entanglement shenanigans like of which you have seen done in much better ways in series like “Brooklyn Nine Nine” or “Parks and Recreation.” The narrative, which follows the passionate misadventures of an influential airline company CEO and her exceptionally skilled lawyer, lacks basic intrigue to make viewers care about the characters. For what it’s worth, this highly predictable drama consists of one silver lining, i.e the chemistry between its leads. But then again, when paired with trite dialogues, lazy writing and forced humor, even J-Lo can’t save a sinking ship.

Jackie Cruz Played By Jennifer Lopez

One of the greatest performers of all time, singer, composer and actorJennifer Lopez is a woman of many talents. Starting her acting journey with “Living Color”, J-Lo has acted in numerous rom coms which includes “Monster-in-law,” “Shall We Dance?”, “The Wedding Planner,” “Maid in Manhattan” to name a few. In “Office Romance”, she plays the role of Jackie Cruz, the charismatic, successful, hardworking CEO of Air Cruz who falls in love with the company’s chief lawyer, Daniel, by going against established protocols. A good part of Jackie’s life has been spent under the shadows of her celebrity father who never acknowledged her contribution in strengthening the family business. As a result, Jackie’s need of seeking validation from her old man prompts her to tolerate getting pushed over by him and other elder execs of the company. A sharp businesswoman, Jackie is shown to be generous, kind and supportive towards her employees, which solidifies the narrative’s status as fiction as in the real world, CEOs tend to act exactly the opposite.

Anyway, as shown during her relationship with Daniel, Jackie has a troubling trait, i.e her struggle to completely trust the person she loves as she spies on Daniel to peep into his personal life. Although it is understandable as to why she feels insecure, given her ex-husband had cheated on her with his secretary.

Daniel Blanchflower Played By Brett Goldstein

Actor/ writer Brett Goldstein gained recognition by portraying the role of Roy Kent in AppleTV+’s comedy series, “Ted Lasso”, where he initially joined as a writer. Aside from this, some of his notable small screen performances include series like “Catherine Tate’s Nan,” “Hoff the Record”, and “Soulmates” – created and written by Goldstein. Some of his acclaimed silver screen roles include movies like “Wish You Were Here,” “SuperBob” – both of which are his creations. Aside from acting as the lead British lawyer, Daniel Blanchflower, Goldstein is also a co-writer in “Office Romance”. Daniel is a composed, observant, highly skilled lawyer, and a private person who wants to keep his personal life a secret from his close ones for obvious reasons. Despite having a rough childhood while growing up in the care of an abusive father, Daniel was able to keep his morals in check to never stray off the right track. Unfortunately, his sister, Lizzie, couldn’t do so and went down a dark path. Daniel is caring towards his sister, but wants this part of his life to remain a secret from everyone else, including the person whom he loves.

Daniel is shown to be a supportive partner, as time and again he encourages Jackie to stand up to his father, reassuring her by showing faith in her leadership. Daniel’s appreciation for Jackie is not tinged with his feelings for her, instead it is his true assessment of a leader who is proficient in the professional sphere.

Sydney Bloom Played By Elizabeth Betty Gilpin

Actor Elizabeth Betty Gilpin has gained acclaim thanks to her performances in shows like “Glow”, “Nurse Jackie”, “Mrs. Davis” etc. She has also acted in movies such as “The Hunt,” “A Dog’s Journey,” “The Grudge” etc. In “Office Romance”, she plays the role of Jackie’s right hand woman, Sydney Bloom, an extremely perceptive, sharp individual who wants the best for her friend and the company. Sydney’s eccentricities, her suspicion about the ongoing romance between Jackie and Daniel, occasional animated outbursts and the zany delivery scene makes the movie quite entertaining. It’s a shame that her character isn’t given much dimension, because Gilpin was absolutely killing the role.

Miscellaneous Characters

Other than the main characters, “Office Romance” boasts of a quite stacked supporting cast who did well with the roles they were given. Jodie Whittaker plays the role of Lizzie, Daniel’s sister who is serving time in prison for murder. Lizzy’s inclusion and the sibling bond shared with her gave Daniel’s character a certain depth, but like the majority of the side characters, Lizzy is grossly underwritten. Edward James Olmos plays the role of Captain Jack Cruz, founder of AirCruz and Jackie’s father, who never showed genuine appreciation for his daughter’s efforts. Bradley Whitford plays the role of Peter Vance, former chief legal counsel of AirCruz. Amy Sedaris plays Julie Schatz, private eye employed by a rival airlines company.
