Penang bracing for another round of heavy traffic during CNY break

PENANG is bracing for another round of heavy traffic during next week's upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations. However, the volume has already been increasing over the last few days.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow assured the people of Penang that the present congestion is temporary and that the long-term benefits of an LRT are essential for the state.

The consequences of an almost nonstop economic growth since 2008 have caused traffic in the state to worsen especially after COVID-19 in 2020, where many who lost their jobs in surrounding areas sought employment on the island instead.

Chow said that the LRT would enhance connectivity and improve infrastructure.

He told a press conference that the state remains committed towards managing challenges such as traffic congestion during peak periods, particularly festive seasons, school holidays, and long weekends.

The state has started the year by introducing dedicated public bus lanes during peak hours at George Town while exploring the prospects of limiting parking on congested roads and raising parking charges at the public bays of the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

“We recognise that Penang frequently experiences heavy traffic, especially during holidays when both residents and tourists fill the streets. The LRT project marks the start of a transformative journey for Penang,” Chow said.

Drawing lessons from the Klang Valley’s infrastructural developments, Chow acknowledged the disruptions that often accompany large-scale projects but stressed their importance for progress.

“Mega infrastructure projects inevitably bring temporary inconveniences. However, they are necessary stepping stones toward a brighter, more connected future. Our priority is to minimise these challenges and ensure smooth transitions during the construction phase,” he said.

Chow also outlined the state’s focus on traffic management, highlighting plans to implement an efficient traffic management system to mitigate congestion.

“An effective traffic plan will be crucial to maintaining smooth traffic flow and reducing disruptions. Simultaneously, we aim to educate the public about the project, fostering understanding and support for Penang’s long-term vision,” he explained.

“The inconveniences are undeniable, but the benefits of this project will be a game-changer for Penang,” Chow said. - January 21, 2025.
