PTRS contributes to Kuala Langat school's increased average school grade

KUALA LANGAT, April 26 — The Selangor People’s Tuition Programme (PTRS) has been identified as one of the key contributors to the encouraging improvement in the average school grade for the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.

SMK Bandar Saujana Putra’s senior administrative assistant Mohd Naudi Haqqi Ahmad said the school successfully recorded an average school grade of 4.90 in the 2024 SPM, compared to 5.11 in 2023.

It also achieved a 97.39 per cent pass rate among students eligible for certification, which is considered a remarkable figure with a total of 230 SPM candidates.

“Bahasa Melayu has improved in terms of quality, where we achieved a subject average grade of 3.79, an increase compared to 2023. English recorded a subject average grade of 4.42.

“The compulsory pass subject, History, also showed a very encouraging improvement with a subject average grade of 4.41 and a pass rate of 97.39 per cent.

“So, these three subjects are the core subjects at the school level and are among the six main subjects in PTRS. The other subjects under PTRS also performed well and showed improvement,” he told Media Selangor yesterday.

Naudi added that the school’s improved performance in the 2024 SPM is undoubtedly partly due to PTRS, organised by the Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI.

“Two months before SPM, we held a final sprint month. I asked the teachers at this school to prepare focused timetables, where each teacher teaching Form Five classes was required to complete the PTRS module.

“That is why I say PTRS played a role in our school’s achievement in the 2024 SPM. Although the PTRS classes at this school were limited to 35 students whose family income averages below RM5,000, the modules were distributed to all students regardless of background, meaning all SPM candidates at this school benefited from the programme.

“Those 35 students are considered the adopted children of MBI and PTRS. They received free classes for six subjects — Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics, Science, History, and Additional Mathematics — held every Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, with lunch provided during class sessions,” he said.

SMK Bandar Saujana Putra, in Jenjarom, also recorded two students who achieved Grade A in all subjects, including one who participated in the PTRS classes.

PTRS is an assistance programme offering additional classes in Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics, Science, History, and Additional Mathematics for students from low-income families who perform at average or weak academic levels.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said 200,000 Form Four and Form Five students are targeted to benefit from the programme over a five-year period.

PTRS has been identified as one of the key contributors to the increase in the number of students in Selangor who achieved grade A in all subjects in the 2024 SPM.

He said the intervention through the programme helped boost the number of excellent grade achievers from 2,005 candidates (3.15 percent) last year to 2,368 (3.65 percent) this year.
