Work Ministry : Road repairs prioritised Gerik-Jeli highways due to constraint funds
Works Ministry is strategically deploying its limited resources to tackle the most pressing road repairs nationwide, according to Alexander Nanta Linggi.

Amid the mounting financial constraints, the Minister disclosed that the Ministry is prioritizing urgent repairs and maintenance across the country’s federal roads, with the monumental task requiring an estimated sum of RM4 billion. The East-West Highway Gerik-Jeli stretch is among the vital roads under review.

"We have data identifying which roads require attention and the associated costs. To get every road in perfect condition, we would need around RM4 billion.

However, due to limited funds, we are taking a phased approach to this project. We prioritise roads that need immediate repair and carry out repairs based on urgency," he said, as quoted from NST.

The Works Ministry's maintenance efforts are hindered by a significant funding shortfall, with only RM1 billion allocated for many years, despite an estimated annual requirement of RM4 billion to maintain federal roads.

Addressing this issue, Nanta disclosed that RM55 million has been earmarked for ongoing maintenance works on the East-West Highway, encompassing resurfacing, street light repairs, and upgrades to non-pavement facilities like guardrails and signage. The project is currently 10% complete, with the remaining works scheduled to be finished by August, providing some relief for motorists along the route.
