Why Google Is Putting Billions Into Malaysia’s Digital Future

Google is investing RM9.4 billion to establish its first data centre and Google Cloud region in Malaysia. The move is expected to contribute RM15.04 billion to the local economy and create 26,500 jobs by 2030.

The announcement follows a meeting between Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and Google representatives in Washington. Discussions centred on advancing artificial intelligence capabilities, strengthening cybersecurity, and expanding digital skills development in Malaysia.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a stable investment environment to attract high-quality digital infrastructure projects.

By setting up physical infrastructure locally, Google is positioning Malaysia as a key player in Southeast Asia’s digital economy. The investment is designed to support long-term growth in AI and cloud services while equipping the local workforce with relevant skills.
