Toddlers battling leukaemia need up to 10 units of platelets daily, public urged to donate blood

By DayakDaily Team

KUCHING, July 3: Two young children—aged two years and four months—diagnosed with leukaemia and currently receiving treatment in the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are in urgent need of daily blood transfusions, including up to 10 units of platelets each day, in addition to red blood cells, to sustain their critical treatment.

Both patients have blood type A+ and depend on these transfusions as part of their fight against the life-threatening illness.

With the high and growing demand for blood components, particularly type A+, the SGH Blood Bank is appealing to the public—especially regular donors who are due for their next donation—to step forward and donate consistently to help ensure a stable blood supply.

“We are urging A+ donors in particular to come forward, but it’s important to remember that all blood types are needed. There are many other patients who also rely on blood transfusions every day. All blood groups matter,” the SGH Blood Bank stated in a post shared on social media today.

Blood donation is a medically supervised procedure that follows stringent infection prevention protocols to ensure the safety of donors, recipients, and healthcare workers.

Members of the public are encouraged to visit the SGH Blood Bank to donate, as regular contributions are vital to saving lives and ensuring no patient is left waiting for essential blood products. — DayakDaily
