21yo man, 17yo boy claim trial to assaulting spectator in Siburan basketball game

KUCHING, July 4: Two youths appeared in the Magistrates’ Court here today to deny allegations of assaulting a spectator during a basketball event in Siburan on June 28.

The accused, Sia Ming Hui, 21, and a 17-year-old boy, were jointly charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, which pertains to voluntarily causing hurt with common intention. If found guilty, they face up to 10 years in prison, a fine, whipping, or any combination of these punishments.

The alleged incident took place around 9pm at a basketball court in Siburan, where the pair reportedly attacked the victim.

Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan granted both accused bail at RM2,500 each, with one local surety, and scheduled the case for pre-trial case management on August 15.

Inspector Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin led the prosecution, while defence counsel Lim Lian Kee appeared on behalf of the two accused.

According to a statement from the Siburan Basketball Club on June 29, the assault occurred when a group of uninvited individuals entered the venue and attacked a spectator.

The organisers clarified that no players, team members, referees, or committee members were involved in the incident.

They added that a police report was filed following the incident, which damaged the club’s property and equipment. — DayakDaily
