Thanks to Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an immediate, unconditional ceasefire following a meeting among the three leaders.

In case you missed it, clashes broke out between Thailand and the Cambodian government over border conflicts on July 24, which resulted in the death of at least 34 people, with over 130 injured. The conflict is decades old, which re-emerged after a landmine explosion along the border wounded five Thai soldiers.

Al-Jazeera reported that rocket missiles were fired by the Cambodian military at Thai civilians, and Thailand retaliated by bombing areas of Cambodia using F-16 fighter jets.

Anwar, who hosted the talks as chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), announced the truce flanked by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. The talks were conducted in Putrajaya, and in his Facebook post last night, Anwar also name-checked US President Donald J Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, for their support in the talks.

Trump, however, also claimed victory on the ceasefire, saying that his involvement brought peace to Thailand and Cambodia.

In a Truth Social post, Trump stated that he had spoken to the leaders of both countries, and following his involvement in the talks, both countries have reached a ceasefire and peace. Trump, however, did not mention Anwar Ibrahim in his post.

“By ending this War, we have saved thousands of lives. I have instructed my Trade Team to restart negotiations on Trade.”

“I have now ended many Wars in just six months — I am proud to be the President of PEACE!”

The US Department of State, on the other hand, expressed its gratitude to Anwar for hosting the talks, and in its statement, the department urged all parties to follow through on the commitments.

Anwar also thanked the Cambodian and Thai governments for choosing the path of diplomacy.
