Apple may be keeping quiet, but the iOS 26 beta isn’t. Hidden inside developer beta 6 is a system image that hints at something big: live, in-person translation for AirPods.

The asset shows a gesture — pressing both stems at once — tied to the Translate app and displaying text in English, Portuguese, French and German. Right now, it’s linked specifically to the upcoming AirPods 4 and the second-generation AirPods Pro.

It’s not entirely out of the blue. When Apple showed off Live Translation at WWDC25, it made a point of highlighting FaceTime, Messages and Phone calls, but skipped real-world conversations. Bloomberg had already whispered about the feature earlier this year, and this beta find makes it look like the company’s just about ready to roll it out.Real-time conversation translation is exactly the kind of thing wearables excel at. Meta’s Ray-Bans have dabbled in similar territory, but if Apple nails the latency and accuracy, AirPods could quietly outshine them. Of course, this isn’t likely to run on the earbuds alone — meaning the feature will depend heavily on which iPhone you have.

Given how Apple’s other Live Translation features require Apple Intelligence on newer devices, it wouldn’t be surprising if this one’s locked to the iPhone 17 range.

For now, the confirmed Live Translation lineup includes languages like Chinese (Simplified), English (UK, US), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil) and Spanish (Spain), spread across Apple’s apps and even the latest Apple Watches.
