9 Running Trails in KL and PJ to Explore

We introduce you to our favourite running trails around KL and PJ, where you can achieve your cardio goals alongside the great outdoors.

We’ve seen the running clubs and the social media flexes. It’s no secret that running has taken over the streets and fitness communities, especially with the boom of local running clubs. For those of you who are just starting your fitness journey or want to spice up your workout routines, running is a great way to work up a sweat without any equipment. Plus, there’s no denying the social benefits of a running club! Luckily for us, KL and PJ are home to some incredible running trails to get your cardio fix as well as some fresh air. Below, we’ve compiled some of our favourites for you to explore and elevate your workout experiences.

1. KLCC Park

In the shadows of the Petronas Twin Towers, KLCC Park is an urban runner’s dream. Enveloped by skyline views, each jog here is a visual delight. It boasts a 1.3-kilometer rubberised track with drinking fountains found along the way. On top of that, there are also rest stops, a children’s playground, and open spaces for you to take advantage of with your family or running group.

2. Perdana Botanical Gardens

Whether you’re clocking laps around the lakes or lush botanical displays, there’s a route for everyone at the Perdana Botanical Gardens. It isn’t far from historical landmarks such as the Islamic Arts Museum, Butterfly Park, and Bird Park, so you can hop over to them after your workout session too. It’s a must-visit destination for tourists looking to combine their workout with some cultural exploration.

3. Desa Park City

With its well-lit pathways, Desa Park City is ideal for running with loved ones—or even your furry companions—at any time of day. Its lakeside trails range from 1km to 2.3km, so there’s something for every level of jogger or cyclist. Not to mention, the park is also connected to the bustling retail and lifestyle area, so you can head to a nearby café or restaurant for a post-run refuel.

4. Bukit Kiara Park

For nature lovers, Bukit Kiara Park boasts an extensive network of trails surrounded by dense forests, gentle streams, and abundant wildlife. Spanning over 1,200 acres, this park caters to joggers of different fitness levels with the inclines of Kiara Hill and the more manageable Bukit Kiara Trail. Whether you’re a beginner looking for a scenic route or a runner looking to test their skills, the park’s versatility and natural beauty make it worthy of a visit. Ask any runner or hiker and they’ll tell you this is one of the most reliable running trails in KL for you to visit!

5. Bukit Jalil Recreational Park

Built for the 1998 Commonwealth Games, Bukit Jalil Recreational Park is one of the more popular running trails in KL, featuring hilly terrains and challenging trails. This location is especially ideal for those who like to test their limits or add a little intensity to their running. Alternatively, you can explore the International Garden, which features landscaped areas styled to represent 10 different countries. However, do keep an eye out for the park’s wild monkey residents and remember to keep a safe distance from them!

6. KL Forest Eco Park

Located at the base of KL Tower, KL Forest Eco Park lies hidden within the city’s resident forest reserve. You can escape the concrete jungle on trails that wind through a tropical rainforest teeming with biodiversity, leading to a Canopy Walk that offers panoramic views of the city. Those looking to get in touch with nature, without having to leave the KL’s borders, will particularly love hearing the sounds of chirping birds on their walk. Guided tours are available for a deeper insight into the park’s natural wonders.

7. Kepong Metropolitan Park

Escape the city buzz and head to Kepong Metropolitan Park’s 3.5-kilometre loop trail. It provides a moderately challenging route that encircles a lake. Enhance your fitness regime by utilising its various workout stations as well as the viewpoint tower, which overlooks the surrounding landscape. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a leisurely stroller, this park is a great choice for a fun and serene outdoor experience.

8. Taman Saujana Hijau

Here’s a bonus trail to check out in Putrajaya! Taman Saujana Hijau is a 41-hectare park known for its three themed gardens, each offering unique attractions. Some popular sights include a European-style pavilion as well as expansive flower fields and pine trees. For active visitors, take advantage of the 2.8-kilometre forested trails that wind through the peaceful environment. It’s especially rewarding when you reach the highest hill to catch sunrise or sunset views after an intense running session.

9. Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM)

Challenge yourself with some hilly trails at Forest Research Institute Malaysia AKA FRIM! If you’re keen on  combining your run with a little hike, this is the ideal place to get your steps in. Not only will you be treated to some cooler weather thanks to the shady trees, but you’ll also get to discover the great biodiversity that UNESCO World Heritage Property has to offer. Running is allowed on the designated roads only, which offer a lengthy total of 7.5 kilometres. To add a little excitement to your workout, pop over to the FRIM Skywalk, where you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the stunning forests.
