KUCHING, Aug 29: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has requested Sarawak Metro to establish a dedicated communication hotline not only for the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) Blue Line Package 2 project but also for future infrastructure projects affecting residential areas, to ensure residents are kept informed and engaged throughout development works.
The call was made by MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who chaired a dialogue session today with residents of Taman Stutong Indah to address concerns linked to the KUTS Blue Line Package 2 construction.
Wee said the hotline would serve as a centralised platform for residents to voice concerns, report safety issues, seek clarification, and receive timely updates.
“While we fully support development that brings long-term benefit to the city, it is crucial that we also protect the well-being and peace of mind of our residents. This engagement reflects our commitment to transparency, inclusiveness, and leaving no one behind,” he said in a statement today.
Held at the KUTS Project Site Office in Tabuan Jaya, the dialogue brought together Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How, officials from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd, contractors, and residents from the surrounding neighbourhood.
Residents at the session had raised issues related to noise, safety, road access, and communication gaps before construction begins.
Wee stressed that community engagement must occur prior to any major construction works, to avoid disruptions and misunderstandings.
“It is not just about building infrastructure, but about building trust. Community engagement must be embedded at every stage of the development process,” he added.
The dialogue concluded on a positive note, with stakeholders reaffirming their commitment to responsible urban development and meaningful public participation.
MBKS pledged to continue working closely with all stakeholders to ensure that urban development progresses in harmony with community needs, keeping Kuching a city where no one is left behind. — DayakDaily
