KUCHING, Sept 17: Sarawak is eyeing the opportunity to position itself as Southeast Asia’s supply chain hub by leveraging China’s Zhengzhou’s renowned expertise in logistics, supply chain management, and smart city applications to drive development in ports and logistics park planning.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the close ties between Kuching and Zhengzhou, which first began through cultural exchanges, have since evolved into deeper collaborations in education, trade, and tourism.
“With Zhengzhou companies establishing a presence in Kuching, I hope they will consider making Sarawak the supply chain hub of Southeast Asia. This will not only deepen trade relations but also strengthen economic cooperation between Kuching, Sarawak, and Zhengzhou,” he said.
Wee was speaking during a welcome dinner for the visiting delegation from the People’s Government of Henan Province, China, at Sarawak Club on Tuesday (Sept 16).
He noted that Kuching South’s development roadmap is aligned with the Sarawak government’s Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which envisions building a smart, green, and sustainable city.
“Along this journey, we aim to enhance cooperation with Henan Province and Zhengzhou, particularly in smart logistics, talent development, and sustainable urban solutions,” he added.
Wee expressed confidence that the strong foundation of friendship would allow Kuching and Zhengzhou to unlock new avenues of cooperation, bringing shared benefits while standing as a model of Malaysia–China friendship.
Meanwhile, Zhengzhou People’s Municipal Government Mayor Zhuang Jianqiu said the cooperation between Zhengzhou and Kuching could be further elevated through stronger economic collaboration, which would shine even brighter with joint efforts.
He hoped the partnership would continue to grow, particularly in industry, trade, culture, tourism, and education. — DayakDaily
