Sabah Institute of Art eyes upgrade to university college

KOTA KINABALU (Sept 19): The Sabah Institute of Art (SIA) is working towards upgrading to university college status, a long-envisioned goal championed by its president, Professor Dato’ Sri Dr Wilson Yong.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said the move would mark a milestone for Sabah and Borneo.

“If realised, Sabah Institute of Art University College will become the first fully art, design and music University College in Borneo,” he said during SIA’s 30th Convocation Ceremony at the Putera Ballroom here today, where 68 students graduated.

He said such an achievement would open new opportunities for Sabah.

“Imagine the possibilities: a homegrown centre of excellence where young people can pursue higher studies without leaving Sabah; a hub where creative industries and academic research merge to drive innovation; a landmark institution that puts Sabah on the map, not only in Malaysia but also internationally, as a leader in creative education,” he said.

Mustapha praised the graduates, saying they had every reason to be proud of their achievements. He reminded them, however, that graduation is just the beginning.

“The world is changing faster than ever before. Technology, artificial intelligence and globalisation are reshaping industries, including art and design. My hope is that you never stop learning. Education is a lifelong journey,” he said.

He urged graduates to stay true to their passion and continue adapting, while also commending parents and lecturers for their sacrifices and dedication.

Highlighting SIA’s 35-year legacy, Mustapha said the institution has nurtured countless talents who now serve in creative industries locally and internationally.

He also reminded that art, design, and music are essential.

“They may seem secondary, but in truth, they are indispensable. Art preserves our heritage, design drives innovation, and music unites us across boundaries. Together, they inspire change and improve lives,” he said.
