What Caused The Power Outages In Klang Valley And Johor?

A widespread power disruption struck several parts of Peninsular Malaysia on 15 October 2025 — affecting malls, commercial buildings, traffic signals and residential areas. The incident impacted regions including Klang Valley, Johor Bahru, Kluang, Tampin, Melaka, Ipoh, Kuantan and Sendayan.

Traffic lights, commercial buildings and shopping malls were disrupted.

TNB Restores Power After Disruption

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) announced that electricity supply to the affected areas was fully restored as of 5:54pm local time. In a statement, TNB extended its apologies for the disruption and thanked customers for their patience as technical teams worked to stabilise the grid.

Root Cause: Incident at Edra’s Melaka Plant

TNB confirmed that the disruption originated from an incident at the Edra Power Plant in Melaka. Edra later stated that the outage was caused by a lightning strike at its Melaka facility during heavy rain and thunderstorms. The company said immediate response efforts were launched to restore operations and that preventive mechanisms would be reviewed to avoid future occurrences.

About the Edra Melaka Plant

The Edra Melaka Power Plant, located in Alor Gajah, Melaka, is a 2,242 MW combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) facility. It comprises three generating blocks, each capable of producing just above 745 MW, using GE 9HA.02 gas turbines, STF-D650 steam turbines, W88 generators, and heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs).

The plant is fully owned by Edra Energy Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of the CGN EDRA Group. Its final generating block began commercial operations in February 2022, making it the largest CCGT power plant in Southeast Asia at the time. The facility contributes around 12 per cent of Peninsular Malaysia’s total electricity demand, generating an estimated 19.6 billion kWh annually.
