Proton S70 Fuel Competition Achieves 3.14L Per 100km

PROTON recently held the ‘Penang PROTON One Tank Challenge’ with the event being a part of the district level Hari Sukan Negara celebrations for Daerah Seberang Perai Tengah on 11 October.

As one of the strategic partners for celebrations, the company used the opportunity to highlight the Proton S70 sedan by challenging owners to test the fuel efficiency and spirited performance of their vehicles in a real-world test.

The event also occurred a week after PROTON was announced as one of the title sponsors for the Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) 2025 where participants will stand a chance to win a brand- new Proton S70 as the lucky draw prize.

Themed “Drive Efficiently. Live Actively. Celebrate Malaysia,” the One Tank Challenge event aligned with the National Sports Day goal of promoting active and healthy lifestyles. Participants took in a scenic 110km route encompassing roads on the island, mainland as well as both bridges linking Penang Island to Seberang Prai.

Running from 8am to 2pm, 33 Proton S70 owners participated pitting their economical driving skills against each other while enjoying the unmatched driving involvement offered by their vehicle. They were flagged off by YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy and the Penang state assembly member for Paya Terubong.

Competition winners decided by lowest fuel consumption

With 33 eager participants for the event, competition to win the top prizes was keen as everyone vied for the cash prizes offered to winners. Starting at Setia Sentral Juru, the route covered both the mainland and the island, heading first to Bayan Lepas and George Town via the Second Penang Bridge. The drivers then returned to the starting point, completing the extensive loop across the First Penang Bridge.

Before departure, each car was filled to the brim and had their fuel door flaps sealed to ensure everybody competed on an equal footing. This also meant the determining factor would be the skill of the competitors who needed to drive efficiently by using the accelerator and brakes smoothly while balancing the need to be economical with a minimum average speed so they could complete the journey within the specified time limit.

The ultimate winner was the driver who records the lowest fuel consumption (litre/100 km), calculated precisely by the amount of fuel required to top up the tank upon their return. In addition to the top fuel economy prize, awards were also presented for best social media engagement (displaying moments with the Proton S70) and a colouring contest for family members of competitors.

At the end of the event, Abu Bakar Bin Mohd Yusoff was declared the winner after he achieved a result of using just 3.48L/100km. This equates to an impressive average of 31.61km/L, giving a theoretical maximum range of 1,580km from the Proton S70’s 50-litre fuel tank. For his achievement, Abu Bakar received a cash prize amounting to RM1,000.
