Microsoft is expanding the capabilities of Windows 11 with a wave of new features designed to improve usability, security, and creativity. The latest update — version 25H2 — brings major updates to Copilot, File Explorer, gaming tools, accessibility options, and security features, marking one of the system’s most AI-driven upgrades yet.

File Explorer Gets AI Upgrades

File Explorer now supports new AI actions, allowing users to interact with files more intelligently. These include Bing Visual Search, Blur Background, Erase Objects, and Remove Background, all of which can be triggered directly from the context menu. Users with Microsoft 365 subscriptions can also use Copilot’s Summarise feature to quickly generate summaries of Word documents and files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint.

Additionally, Microsoft 365 commercial users will see People Cards integrated into File Explorer. Hovering over a collaborator’s icon now displays information about their role and connection to the file, helping teams stay organised without switching apps.

Widgets and Personalisation

The Widgets board gets a new, more visual Discover feed, offering personalised stories curated by Copilot. Users can also create multiple dashboards to separate widgets by theme or interest, and even add widgets directly to the lock screen — including Weather, Sports, and Watchlist options.

Accessibility and Narrator Improvements

Windows 11’s Narrator now includes a Braille Viewer, displaying both text and Braille on-screen to help teachers and students follow along simultaneously. It also works more smoothly with Microsoft Word, offering improved voice feedback and clearer navigation through tables and comments.

Copilot+ PC Enhancements

On Copilot+ PCs, the Recall (Preview) tool introduces a personalised homepage that highlights recent snapshots, frequently used apps, and websites — allowing users to pick up tasks where they left off. Meanwhile, Click to Do adds concise summarisation options and introduces action tags to help users discover new AI-powered tasks.

Agent in Settings now appears on all Copilot+ PCs, offering direct navigation links and faster system management through conversational commands.

Smarter Voice Access

Windows’ Voice Access feature now supports natural language commands, letting users control their PCs more intuitively. Instead of using rigid phrasing, users can issue commands like “Can you open Edge?” or “Switch to Microsoft Word” — and the system will understand the intent automatically.

Gaming Enhancements

A major highlight is the Gaming Copilot (Beta) — a new feature integrated into the Xbox Game Bar. Acting as a personal gaming assistant, it helps players find tips, manage achievements, and solve in-game challenges through voice interaction.

Other gaming updates include a Network Quality Indicator for cloud gaming diagnostics, better syncing of saved games across devices, and visual updates for Game Bar widgets.

Security and Connectivity Boosts

Microsoft has further strengthened Windows 11’s security with deeper protections against phishing and malware. The Windows Hello sign-in experience has been visually refreshed, now automatically prioritising the most secure authentication method — including passkeys. Users can manage passkeys with integrated support for third-party managers like 1Password.

Parts of the Windows kernel have been rewritten in Rust, reducing memory-related vulnerabilities. Meanwhile, Wi-Fi 7 support delivers faster and more reliable connectivity, including enterprise-level improvements for commercial users.

Developer Tools and Craft Enhancements

Developers get a revamped Advanced Settings page, Windows ML support for on-device AI model inference, and a new Edit command-line text editor built into Windows.

Smaller “craft” updates improve everyday use: notification centres now show on secondary monitors, the clock can display seconds, and more time and language settings have moved from Control Panel to the Settings app.

Paint now supports project files and an opacity slider for brushes, while Snipping Tool adds Quick Markup for instant annotations. Notepad gains AI-powered Summarise, Write, and Rewrite functions — available even without a Microsoft 365 subscription.

Windows 11 version 25H2 is available now through Windows Update for eligible PCs.
