MAHB confirms another aerotrain incident at KLIA Terminal 1, awaits contractor report

MALAYSIA Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has confirmed that the aerotrain service at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 suffered another technical fault this morning, the latest in a series of incidents affecting the system.

In a statement, MAHB said it was awaiting detailed reports and clarification from the contractors responsible — IJM-PESTEC Joint Venture (IPJV) and Alstom — regarding the latest occurrence, as well as an earlier incident reported on 15 October.

The airport operator said preliminary findings pointed to issues with the aerotrain’s power system, which falls under the responsibility of IPJV.

“To mitigate any impact, proactive measures have been activated. This includes deploying dedicated resources and stationing the aerotrain contractors on-site around the clock to help ensure seamless passenger movements,” MAHB said.

The company added that it continues to work closely with the Transport Ministry and the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) to ensure that all corrective measures are implemented without delay.

Despite the recurring issues, MAHB assured that KLIA operations remained fully functional throughout the recent ASEAN Summit, during which the airport handled more than 530,000 passenger movements and 3,400 flights.

Earlier this month, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah revealed that the aerotrain had experienced 19 incidents between 2 July and 30 September.

He said several of those cases led to temporary service suspensions, requiring passengers to be escorted to the terminal. The disruptions were attributed to multiple factors, including signalling faults and human-related incidents such as passengers forcibly opening train doors. - October 28, 2025
