‘Unity does not require uniformity’ – MBKS Mayor defends diversity of govt-funded Chinese schools

KUCHING, Oct 29: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng has criticised academician Dr Mohd Ridhuan Tee’s suggestion to close, privatise, or assimilate Chinese vernacular schools, describing them as divisive and uninformed.

Wee stressed that Tee’s remarks lacked the understanding of Malaysia’s multicultural education system and the important role these schools have played in nation-building.

“Chinese vernacular schools have long stood as pillars of discipline, excellence, and community spirit. They produce loyal Malaysians who contribute to society with skill, dedication, and integrity. To demand their closure or conversion undermines our shared values of respect and coexistence.

“In Sarawak, we have long embraced the principle that unity does not require uniformity. We celebrate our differences as a source of strength. We do not need to erase identity to prove loyalty, nor destroy diversity to build harmony,” he said in a statement.

He further pointed out that Tee’s repeated fixation on cultural and lifestyle issues, including his remarks on alcohol at community events, diverts attention from the real challenges facing our education system such as inclusivity, quality, and access.

“Malaysia’s multicultural education system is one of its greatest assets. It has produced generations of citizens who embody the spirit of tolerance and progress. Rather than dismantle what works, we should focus on strengthening mutual understanding and shared values across all communities.

“The strength of our nation lies not in conformity, but in respect for language, culture, and heritage that together form the foundation of Malaysia’s unity in diversity,” Wee affirmed. – DayakDaily
