'Breathless' Season 2 Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Is Nicolas Dead?

The ending of Breathless, season 2, is just as chaotic as the first season, because we’re left with another cliffhanger that’s absolutely devastating. Of course, this time around, we’re rooting for a man who’s been a villain throughout, but in association with Biel, who is a very dear character to all of us, of course. This season focuses on the privatization of the Joaquin Sorolla Hospital, but apart from that, there are many conflicts, mainly involving the president, Patricia Segura, who has cancer and is standing for reelection. Then there is the relationship between Jesica and Lluis, which is a bond that grows stronger this season until something goes wrong. With Rocio and May, I feel like it was a forced plotline, though, of course, Rocio’s addiction is an important subject to look at. Breathless season 2 was just as busy as the first season, so let’s dive into the ending of this season.

Spoiler Alert

Does Patricia Win the Elections?

In Breathless season 2’s ending, Patricia Segura gets reelected, and she’s ready to put up a strong front, but her cancer is still around, and she just needs one last dose of Sophie’s trial to truly be cured. However, by the time she asks Nestor to get her this final dose, Sophie’s already vanished into thin air. The problem here is that we don’t know who tipped her off, but to me it seems like she just knew somehow that Pilar would bring the cops, so while she packed her stuff in the day, she probably came back and took away all her data after. We know that she needed just a few more months to finish her research and find a cure, and I don’t think Sophie’s a bad person as much as someone who is desperate to be known as the lady who cured cancer. She’s an ambitious woman, and that’s her big flaw as a doctor. This leaves Patricia with no final dose, though, and my big guess is that this means her cancer will relapse. We can only hope that Sophie returns secretly and gives Patricia that final dose to save the president. To be fair, I’m not sure what this reelection means for the hospital, and now that Sophie’s run away, Patricia could think it was Nestor who tipped her off, and this could mess things up badly for the hospital. However, Patricia needs the public to back her, so we’ll have to see how things go from here. Nestor and she might have to join hands to save her life and the hospital and also find the ever-elusive Sophie. Also, this on-and-off thing between Nestor and Patricia is plain weird to me, because he’s supposed to be her doctor. Though I guess she’s found a new ambition, so that’s probably a forgotten tale now.

Nestor spent the whole season trying to prove that Sophie hadn’t truly found a cure but was scamming everybody by faking CTs, etc. This is clearly a sign of jealousy, but also there’s a chance Nestor wanted to be the one to help Patricia and couldn’t, so it’s more upsetting to him. However, it’s important to note that Nestor does realize the importance of giving Patricia the final dose, and he really wants to save her life. Plus, he admits that Sophie was actually doing some good, but it’s too late, and Pilar’s already called the cops on her (probably because of her own demotion and crisis with Oscar).

What Happens With Jesica And Lluis?

In the second season, Jesica chooses Lluis over Biel because she sees him work hard to help her stay alive. She feels their love is renewed, but this feeling is temporary. They say once a cheater, always a cheater, but I know we all love Jesica, so no hate. However, Jesica’s distaste for Lluis doesn’t come from the urge to cheat; it’s just because he and Biel treat her so differently. Lluis is much higher up, not only in the pay grade, but also his job is a very busy one, which doesn’t allow him much time for anything else. He’s also already divorced and has a kid; this definitely has something to do with power dynamics as well, because Jesica’s status in the hospital is much lower. When Jesica gets promoted to Pilar’s role as chief of surgery, she’s delighted despite her PTSD. Fortunately, she’s able to get over that PTSD because of the one emergency surgery she has to do during a fire on the highway. Saving the patient’s life brings her confidence back, which is why she’s able to fight for her role again when Pilar gets demoted from director to chief of surgery, leaving Jesica back at square one.

At this time, Jesica needs Lluis the most. She wants him to help her, not just emotionally, but as someone who supports her in the hospital. Instead of helping her, he tells her not to bring up the topic because he has too many other things on his mind. At the same time, Jesica’s feelings for Biel come back up when she finds out that the new girl, her old friend, Lucia Haro, slept with Biel. The jealousy makes it clear that she’s still mad about him, but moreover, when they spend a little time alone, you can still see the sparks and how desperate Jesica is to be loved. This leaves her alone at the end of the season, leaving the ring Lluis gave her on his desk. I’m sure the guy saw it coming, too, but I hope he doesn’t use it against her.

Why Does Pilar Resign?

Pilar’s son, Oscar, is very anxious this season, and after he has negative side effects from lithium pills, the only way to help is by giving him electroshock therapy. This is something Pilar is entirely against at first, but she then realizes it’s the only thing that can help him, so she agrees. However, she’s got a rivalry going with Nicolas, who is clearly not managing the hospital well. In this feud, Pilar loses her promotion because Nicolas threatens to suspend Oscar’s treatment (which is messed up). But she then tries to get the police to catch Sophie, which also doesn’t end up working, leaving her kind of lost at the end of the season. Additionally, after Quique realized he shouldn’t be messing with Oscar any longer, he meets a guy named Jon, a fellow doctor, and after resisting for a long time, he decides to give him a chance, but the drugs come back to bite him again. This time, Quique doesn’t take any, but Jon has a young daughter and they find ecstasy in her system, ecstasy that Quique had brought over to Jon’s house. This leaves him completely devastated at the end of the season, and I hope it’s made him truly understand how problematic the drugs are, not just as a threat to his own life, but those around him through no fault of their own.

What Happens At Nicolas’?

This season sees Biel interacting with his father, who abandoned him when he was young and got diagnosed with cancer. This abandonment came from fear, apparently, but what’s really stupid is that, in that fear, Nicolas actually lost his family. Biel is clearly mad at his father and calls him by his first name. He feels like his life was ruined because of this guy, but now’s the time for Nicolas to try and fix things a little bit. Nicolas is viewed as a big villain by the staff, but I can tell he’s putting effort into not messing things up with his son again. He’s also starting a new family with his current partner, which makes Biel a little jealous, too. He couldn’t be a parent for him, but he wants to be a father again? Who’s to say he won’t run away a second time?  By the end, we can’t really say that Nicolas is a good person. I mean, he’s already admitted that if this role fails for him, he has a job waiting for him at Healock Pharma, but he does still want to be there for Biel, so he invites him over for dinner using Irene as an excuse. Biel, being the reckless guy that he is, decides to bring Lucia along for moral support. I wonder if Nicolas just wants to work his way into Biel’s good books because it’ll help at the hospital. Anyway, at this dinner, Irene’s water breaks, and she goes into labor prematurely. She’s in terrible pain, and if they don’t operate right there, both the mother’s and baby’s lives will be lost. Lucia isn’t a gynecologist, but she knows she has the capacity to do this surgery, especially with Biel’s help. With Leo and May’s help on a video call, the duo successfully save the mother and child.

Now, Nicolas is especially grateful for his son, because he helped bring his own half-sibling into the world. In the moment of joy and trust, Biel tells his father that Pilar outed Sophie to the police, but he can’t tell a soul about it. Biel trusts his father right there, but quickly regrets it when he goes to the hospital and everything that Sophie worked on is gone. Someone has tipped her off, and he thinks it’s his father because he told him himself. But as I mentioned earlier, I don’t think anyone told Sophie; she already had the foresight to run. We already know she’s been moving across Europe like a ghost in the wind. Given that Biel has no one else to blame, and he feels like he’s at fault that the evidence and the final vial are missing, he decides to yell at his dad.

Is Nicolas dead?

In Breathless season 2’s ending, Nicolas starts to drive to the hospital because Biel tells him to come and sort things out immediately. Nicolas promises he’s coming and that he didn’t tell Sophie anything because he himself just found out about the situation; there was no way things could’ve turned around so quickly. This bit I definitely believe. It’s when Nicolas makes the turn towards the hospital that he gets hit by an oncoming vehicle, leaving Biel with no answers from his dad. All this time, he resented the man, but this is the moment he ends up calling him “dad” for the first time since we saw them together. Biel immediately regrets yelling at his father and blaming him for this mess, but it might be too late. However, this is a hospital show, and there’s no chance they would kill off Nicolas like that. But, if they do, the repercussions would be terrible, and it would leave Biel guilty of stealing away a father from a newborn baby (yikes). Ironically, it would be the same thing that happened to him, abandonment, but by death. There’s really no telling if the man is dead or not, but for Biel’s sake I’m hoping he’s not.
