While many employees look forward to Chinese New Year bonuses, one Malaysian woman’s recent Threads post has sparked debate online after she revealed the amount she received.

And let’s just say… it wasn’t exactly life-changing.

“The strongest reason for me to leave this year.”

In her post, the woman shared a screenshot of her transaction history showing a “Bonus CNY 2026” payment of RM150.

She jokingly wrote that it was the “strongest reason” for her to leave the company this year, adding that others might as well just “remark angpau je.”

In a follow-up post, she hinted that she hopes to find a new job preferably one that offers at least half a month’s salary or even a full month’s salary as bonus.

She also claimed that her company had yet to issue her confirmation letter despite multiple requests, alleging that management kept giving excuses.

“At least you got something…”

Her post quickly gained traction, with many Malaysians sharing their own bonus stories some even more heartbreaking.

One user wrote:

“I’ve worked 5 years with no bonus. Am I the foolish one?”

Another commented:

“My company is even better… salary hasn’t been paid for 2 months. Total arrears 4 or 5 months already. I’ve even lost count.”

Meanwhile, some simply reacted in disbelief:

But not everyone agreed with her frustration.

One netizen pointed out:

“You need to understand that a bonus is a ‘gift’ from the company. It’s not a fixed amount. Even if the company makes huge profits but management decides on RM10, that’s what you get. When someone gives a gift, you can’t expect a certain amount.”

Others shared stories of companies that were far more generous.

One user described their former workplace’s structured bonus system:

“Every bonus season was meriah (exceptional). Long smiles everywhere,” the user wrote.
