Traffic builds on major highways as Hari Raya exodus begins

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic flow out of the Klang Valley has started to build up this evening as people begin returning to their hometowns for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Congestion is reported on routes heading north, south and towards the East Coast.
A Malaysian Highway Authority spokesperson said northbound congestion is occurring on the North-South Expressway from Slim River to Sungai, Tapah to Gopeng, Juru to Perai, and Seberang Jaya to the Sungai Dua Toll Plaza.
For those heading east, traffic is building on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway from Gombak towards Genting Sempah.
Congestion is also reported from Bukit Tinggi to Lentang and at the Bentong Rest Area towards the Bentong Toll Plaza.
The East Coast Highway 2 is experiencing congestion at the Kuala Terengganu Toll Plaza.
In the southern direction, traffic is heavy on the PLUS highway from the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza to Universiti Putra Malaysia.
Further south, congestion is reported from Nilai to Bandar Ainsdale, Sedenak to Kulai, and Setia Tropika to Pasir Gudang.
Weather conditions in most areas this afternoon were reported to be good.
Rain was only reported in the Klang Valley area.
The public is urged to adhere to speed limits and maintain a safe distance between vehicles.
