Traders urge protests relocated from city commercial zones amid concerns over disruption

A FEDERATION representing hawkers and petty traders in Malaysia has urged authorities to shift public demonstrations away from key commercial districts, saying repeated rallies in busy urban areas are disrupting trade and causing financial losses for small businesses.

Federation of Malaysian Hawkers and Petty Traders Association president Datuk Seri Rosli Sulaiman said protests held in densely populated retail zones create congestion, road closures and a drop in customer traffic that directly affects daily earnings.

“I am puzzled as to why these must be held in popular areas. Why not hold them elsewhere, such as Padang Merbok or areas that do not disturb the public and traders?” New Straits Times reported him saying.

He said traders around major shopping areas, particularly near the Sogo shopping complex along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Kuala Lumpur, are regularly affected when large gatherings take place nearby.

According to Rosli, businesses across the area experience a clear downturn in sales during such events as shoppers avoid congested or disrupted streets.

“People visit the area for various purposes, including buying fabric, jewellery, and daily necessities. When conditions become uncomfortable, they choose not to come,” he said.

His remarks follow a recent rally connected to protests against Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, during which a disturbance reportedly occurred after fireworks were set off at the site.

Rosli said central shopping districts should remain accessible, particularly during peak trading days at the end of the week when footfall is highest.

“Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are the primary trading days when people go out to shop. These days should not be disrupted, especially when our economic situation remains uncertain,” he said.

He added that stronger enforcement is needed to prevent similar disruptions from recurring in commercial areas.

“I hope the authorities will be firmer and ensure this does not happen again,” he said. - April 26, 2026
