Selangor to roll out hydrogen-powered Smart Selangor buses by end-2026 in green mobility push

SELANGOR is set to introduce hydrogen-powered Smart Selangor buses as early as the end of 2026, marking a significant step in the

State Investment, Trade and Mobility Committee chairman Ng Sze Han said hydrogen has been identified as one of the most viable clean energy alternatives to replace diesel and other fossil fuels in the long term.

He said the state government has appointed Worldwide Holdings Berhad to spearhead the initiative, including the development of hydrogen production facilities to support the ecosystem.

“This hydrogen will be used in the Smart Selangor bus initiative. If the ecosystem involving electrolyser and hydrogen refuelling stations is completed this year, we can see the implementation of hydrogen buses in Selangor by the end of 2026,” he said during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting in Shah Alam today.

He was responding to an additional question from Pang Sock Tao (PH – Kuala Kubu Baharu) on whether the state has plans to adopt hydrogen technology as a green energy source for the Smart Selangor Bus service.

Ng, who is also the Kinrara assemblyman, said the development of hydrogen infrastructure requires careful planning due to the currently high production costs.

“Therefore, each initiative and project must be implemented carefully to ensure smooth execution once the electrolyser facilities and refuelling stations are completed,” he said.

In addition to hydrogen plans, Ng said the state government is also strengthening its electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem through local authorities by making EV charging infrastructure a requirement for new developments during planning permission applications.

He added that Selangor has already made significant progress in expanding EV charging facilities.

“A review with the Selangor local authorities shows that the current total number of completed and operational EV charging stations in Selangor stands at 1,090 units,” he said. - April 27, 2026
