Facebook has restricted access to the page of Malaysian Chinese Muslim convert activist and preacher Firdaus Wong Wai Hung in Malaysia, following a legal request from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

A notice from Facebook dated 14 May stated: “Because of a legal request from MCMC (Malaysia), we have to restrict access to your Page. This request is based on local laws.”

The page had over 620,000 followers at the time of restriction.

Wong alleged that he had attended an MCMC engagement session earlier this week, where he questioned the regulator’s conduct.

He suggested the block resulted from this, though it could not be independently verified.

Wong said he had hoped attending the session would not result in action against his page.

Not Alone: Wong Names Three Others, Announces Lawsuit

Wong also claimed he is not the only content creator affected, naming three others whose accounts have allegedly been restricted in recent MCMC actions.

They are Tamim Dahri Abdul Razak, a self-proclaimed land activist who allegedly desecrated a sacred Hindu symbol; Zamri Vinoth, whose full name is Muhammad Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu, an Indian-born Muslim convert preacher who has faced charges of incitement and was previously investigated over social media posts; and  S Chandrasegaran, a 47-year-old social media activist who has previously claimed to be the target of threats and arson attacks on his property.

Wong said he has instructed his lawyers to begin legal proceedings against MCMC, the relevant ministry, the minister and the government.

He did not specify the legal grounds; MCMC has not issued a public statement on the matter at the time of writing.

Meanwhile, the restriction has not halted his online presence — he maintains other Facebook accounts and continues to post through them.

Controversy Is Not New to Wong

Wong has previously drawn regulatory scrutiny and is considered one of Malaysia’s most polarising public figures.

A Chinese Muslim convert who embraced Islam in 2005 after being raised in a Buddhist family, he has since become an independent Islamic preacher and activist, and is president of the Multiracial Reverted Muslims (MRM).

In 2024, MCMC investigated him over a viral video, while a separate High Court proceeding examined a post allegedly promoting the covert religious conversion of minors.

The court mandated the removal of the video and emphasised the protection of minors from such practices.

He has also raised concerns about the motivations behind non-Muslims using the Malay language on social media, contrasting it with what he sees as genuine expressions from specific influencers.

He even wrote a book titled “Cina ‘Kiasu’ Atau ‘Kiasi’: Tamak Hidup Takut Mati” which critiques the Chinese kiasu culture and reflects on broader societal issues.

Wong has pushed back against accusations of racism, arguing that critiquing his own community does not constitute racial bias, and that his preaching is universal and not confined to any single race or language.
