'Cape Fear' Episode 1 Recap: What Happened To Zack?

Episode 1 of Cape Fear opens with the score from the 1962 film, and the photo negative visuals of the 1991 film, and takes us to the Bowden residence in Savannah, Georgia, where Anna, Tom, Natalie, and Zack are hosting an Independence Day party for family and friends in their backyard. Since it’s about to rain, they take the party inside. This is when one thing becomes evident: Anna and Tom are worried about Zack, because he seemingly has some mental health issues. Once everyone’s inside and out of earshot, Anna asks Tom if he ever wonders if they deserve the life they are living, and Tom convincingly says that he doesn’t. This warm scene is juxtaposed with a scene of a lady in a room filled with newspaper clippings of Max Cady’s trial. She is crying and listening to music while writing away on a piece of paper. She has a knife, a crack pipe, and a gun on the table. Once she’s done with her suicide note, she shoots herself with the gun. But she doesn’t die, and somebody on the earpiece tells her to shoot herself again. The lady says that she trusts the caller and dies by suicide, for good this time. What’s all of this about? Let’s find out.

Spoiler Alert

Zack Has Issues

Anna and Tom are seen taking photos for the former’s profile in The Times to promote the SJLP (that is where Anna works) fundraising event that’s gonna happen at the museum, with the highlight of the event being Byron French, who has just been let out of prison with a full pardon. But the interviewer is obviously interested in her opinions on Max Cady, as well as the fact that there’s some kinda bombshell that’s gonna drop regarding that decades-old case, even though Anna doesn’t want to delve into that topic. Before the interviewer can poke her any more, the cameraman interrupts their back and forth by pointing out that Natalie is pulling a family of skunks out of the pool. Anna rushes out and tells Natalie that maybe she should wrap up the interview before the nosy interviewer connects this unrelated incident to her profile. However, it’s too late and the interviewer and her cameraman have already arrived at the pool to talk about gators and panthers. This is when Anna gets a call from Noa, her colleague at SJLP, who informs her that Byron needs to be at the fundraiser no matter what. Because if they can’t prove that their firm is any good at saving innocent people from prison time, then they are gonna go bankrupt. Anna says that she’s gonna get on that; in the meantime, she wants Noa to make some phone calls and get some info about Cady. While Anna is busy on this call, the interviewer can be seen yapping away with Natalie, probably trying to get a spicy sound bite she can use in her profile. As for Zack, he’s busy in his room playing an online video game while flirting with one of the other players. That session is interrupted by Tom, because he wants to talk to him about moving from his school to Glenhurst, because the event that transpired at his current school is one of the major sources of his mental health issues. Hence, Zack’s therapist, Dr. Carlisle, has advised Tom and Anna to simply transfer him to a different institution. This agitates Zack so much that he starts hurting himself, and he takes swipes at Tom’s professionalism, which has shifted from helping the poor to exclusively helping the rich. Tom takes that as his cue to bring the conversation to an end and leave Zack alone for the time being.

Max Is Out Of Jail

Tom goes to the under-construction part of the house to consume some acid (the trippy kind) or cannabis oil. But that’s first interrupted by an incoming voicemail from his mistress, and then by Anna, who wants to know how his school-change discussion with Zack went. Tom lies and says it went fine. On that note, Anna takes off to meet Byron and Bunny (Byron’s mother), to see if they are ready to attend the fundraising event the following night, and the pre-fundraiser meeting with the SJLP team that’s happening in a few hours. Byron says that he’s nervous, but Anna convinces them to come with her to the SJLP office and familiarize themselves with Paloma, Noa, Hope, Kyle, Ray, and all her other colleagues who are really excited to meet them. Once they get there, Byron and Bunny’s tension dissipates, and they start vibing with everyone there. Meanwhile, Noa pulls Anna and Tom into her office and gives them a heavy dose of anxiety by revealing that Max’s mistress has died by suicide after confessing to killing Max’s wife; hence, Max has been out of jail for the last 2 days (and nobody knows where he is). Despite being aware of Tom and Anna’s history with Max, Noa suggests that they should use Max to do a PR stunt about the pitfalls of the justice system, thereby garnering even more attention and, most importantly, funds. Anna doesn’t have the bandwidth for this conversation at the moment, so, after having one last chat with Byron, she chooses to go back home; Tom and Natalie follow suit. After getting home, Tom and Anna come clean with Natalie and Zack about the Max issue. As Anna delves into the reason behind why she’s warning her children about the spotlight that’s gonna be on them because of Max’s release, the camera kinda floats over to show us there’s somebody in Zack’s room.

Zack Is Gone

As Zack begins critiquing Anna’s inability to do right by Max despite being his lawyer, the security system of the house goes off. It turns out to be a false alarm, which has apparently been happening for quite some time now, and hasn’t been fixed by the company that installed the security system, even though the Bowdens have sent several complaints. This prompts Anna to tell Tom about the dead skunks (a father, a mother, and 2 children), and how it seems like a warning from Max that he’s gonna kill the Bowdens the same way for sending him to jail for 17 years for apparently no fault of his own. Tom advises Anna to not make a big deal out of it and rest up for the day (even though there’s clearly someone moving around in the under-construction part of the house). While everyone is asleep, Zack is up watching an AI-generated video (the show hasn’t used generative-AI; they’re mimicking generative-AI to show how low IQ Zack is) of Adam Cady. Who’s Adam? He’s Max’s “unborn son,” and the AI program has created a version of him based on what he would have looked like if Max hadn’t killed his pregnant wife. Once that video ends, Zack looks at a graphic picture of Max’s wife’s dead body. And then he starts chatting with someone named AngelX. The following day, Anna sees that Max has grabbed all the headlines already. As Tom and Natalie are watching the news, we learn that Anna was Max’s lawyer, and Tom was the prosecutor. During the trial, Anna was pregnant with Natalie. It’s unclear who Natalie’s dad is, but apparently, Anna and Tom fell in love over the course of Max’s trial, and after Max went to jail, Anna gave birth to Natalie, and after Anna and Tom married each other, they had Zack. Given how it’s been proven now that Max wasn’t guilty, the press makes it seem that Anna and Tom worked together to get Max out of the way so they could commence their romance. As the news broadcasters are about to spin some more wild theories, Tom spots Anna watching him, and Natalie eating up all that nonsense, and he turns off the TV. Since they have to leave for the fundraiser soon, Tom goes to Zack’s room to check if he’s ready, and he is shocked to see that Zack isn’t in.

Max Attends The Fundraiser

The security system reveals that Zack left the house at 5 AM. They try his phone and it keeps going to voicemail. Tom assumes that he is angry about the school-shifting business, and this is how Anna learns that Tom’s conversation with Zack didn’t really go all that well. To assuage their fears, Natalie hypothesizes that Zack is probably at his friend, Danny’s house, playing video games. Now, while Natalie walks over to Danny’s house to check if he’s there (while being followed by someone in a mysterious car, later revealed to be a podcaster looking to rile up Natalie and make a viral video, which he gets successfully), Anna goes to the French household because, as per Noa, Byron and Bunny have gone AWOL. Danny tells Natalie that Zack doesn’t hang around with him anymore, because Zack is more interested in his internet-girlfriend. As for Anna, she joins Kyle as they try to get Bunny or Byron to open the door to their house, but to no avail. Why? Because Bunny and Byron are lying dead just out of Anna and Kyle’s line of sight. Anna gets a call from Noa and she informs her that Byron probably won’t make it to the fundraiser. Noa doesn’t mind that, because Max is gonna be there at the fundraiser. Noa says that Hope is the one who gave Max access to the fundraiser, so Anna charges at her after reaching the venue. Noa counters Anna’s fear with optimism about how much money SJLP is gonna pull in if Max actually shows up. Since Noa is too focused on the financial aspect of the organization, Anna gives her the lowdown about the complicated nature of her dynamic with Max, which finally renders Noa speechless. While heading to the main hall, Anna asks Tom and Natalie about Zack. He’s still unreachable, but since they assume that he’s socializing with his internet-girlfriend, they focus on the fundraiser instead of searching for him. We get a brief glimpse of Zack in a dark and dingy room, zonked out of his mind, and hallucinating about Adam Cady. After that, we return to the fundraiser and see that it’s not going really well, because both Noa and Anna’s speeches turn out to be snooze-fests. When Max enters the hall, everyone wakes up, and Anna starts stuttering.

Max Wants To Work With Anna

Max takes the mic, and the first thing he addresses is how Anna Devereaux has become Anna Bowden because she has married Tom. He says that he doesn’t have any hard feelings towards Tom, because the circumstances didn’t favor him. He gives a speech about the smear campaign against him, how he was asked to plead guilty by Anna, life in prison (which he equates to getting his fingers and toes cut off), and how he has moved on from that botched trial and chosen to forgive both Anna and Tom because they were fed faulty information. He brings it to a close by saying that the criminal justice system needs to be fixed so that someone like him isn’t incarcerated for no fault of their own, and the only way to do that is by donating to the SJLP. That causes the fundraiser to be a big hit and while Noa is happy, Anna doesn’t like it one bit. Since Zack is still unavailable on the phone, Anna decides to call it a night and head home. But Noa and that interviewer from earlier beckon Anna to stand with Max for a photo. Max purposefully crushes the champagne glass in his hand so that he can force Anna to take him away from the crowd and have a private conversation. Fearing for Anna’s life, Tom goes after them, and Max uses this opportunity to show them the head injury the prisoners gave him while he was in jail. Anna and Tom interrupt Max’s yapping about the extent of his injury to ask him what he’s doing at this fundraiser. Max says that he just wanted to meet them; that’s all. As Tom and Anna are about to leave, Max says that when he went into a coma, caused by the head injury, he saw the faces of his dead wife and son. He says something about how they can see each other. He has already seen Tom and Anna’s daughter, and he addresses the fact that they have a son too. Tom and Anna don’t respond to any of Max’s ramblings. It’s only after he starts talking about his wish to join the SJLP so that he can have a purpose in life again that Anna expresses surprise. On that note, Tom and Anna leave the venue.

Zack’s Toe Has Been Cut Off

En route to their home, Natalie questions Anna about the circumstances of Max’s incarceration. Instead of answering that, Anna starts talking about how that trial led to her marriage with Tom. So, Natalie forgets what she had asked her. After getting home, the Bowdens see that the security system has gone off again. They check out the backyard and come face to face with a “panther” (it’s actually a cougar, which means that the interviewer’s knowledge about wildlife is shallow). When the “panther” leaves, Max enters the picture. He claims that he saw that Anna had left her purse at the museum, he asked her colleagues for her address so that he could return it, and that’s why he’s there. Tom apologizes to Max for everything that he’s been through. After thanking Tom, Max asks him about Zack. Coincidentally, that’s when Zack arrives home, still very much not in his senses. He goes straight into the kitchen, starts consuming copious amounts of milk and cake, and then sits down on the floor. While Tom and Natalie try to ascertain what’s going on with him, Max tells Anna about how he’s lowkey envious about the life she has built for herself. He checks if Anna is afraid of him and whether or not she feels any sympathy for him because he spent over a decade in jail apparently for no fault of his own. And on a parting note, Max says that he hasn’t uttered a word about what happened between them, and he doesn’t intend to start doing so as well. This causes Anna to freak out a little, and she rushes inside to check on Zack as Max leaves. In the ending of episode 1, Tom notices that Zack is bleeding from his right foot. He takes off Zack’s shoe and sock and everyone is shocked to notice that one of his toes has been cut off. Anna remembers Max talking about life imprisonment feeling like his fingers and toes were being cut off, and she instantly assumes that, before coming to the fundraiser, Max kidnapped Zack, drugged him enough to make him numb to pain, and then severed one of his toes. Is that what has actually happened though? Only time will tell.
