Lazada cuts 5% of jobs across Southeast Asia markets, including S'pore roles
The cuts are reportedly not part of any AI initiatives

Lazada said today (Jun 23) that it has laid off about 5% of its workforce across Southeast Asia. The move was made after reviewing certain roles in its regional markets, according to a report from the Business Times.

The e-commerce firm did not disclose which roles were affected, adding that the review was based on business needs, role requirements and organisation efficiency. The cuts are understood not to be part of any artificial intelligence initiatives.

Lazada currently operates in six Southeast Asian markets: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

The company said that affected employees will be treated in line with applicable requirements in the respective markets.

In Singapore, Lazada said it will work with the Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union to “ensure the process is handled responsibly and affected employees receive support.” In other markets, the company is coordinating with relevant government entities and agencies.

Vulcan Post has reached out to Lazada, which said it had no further comments.

Lazada’s retrenchment follows e-commerce rival Shopee’s layoffs earlier this month, which cut hundreds of developers, amounting to around 8% of its developer workforce.

Lazada’s last layoffs were in Jan 2024, affecting both senior and junior staff across local and regional roles.
