'From' Season 5 Theories And Predictions: Are The Man In Yellow & Boy In White Warring Gods?

From Season 4 has come to an end, and Season 5 is on the horizon. Here are some of the most pivotal things that happened in the finale of the fourth season: the Bottle Tree was revealed to be integral to the functioning of the talisman in the graveyard; with the Bottle Tree uprooted, the talisman in the graveyard was of no use. The Township was hit with an earthquake right after sky got covered up with dark clouds (which was helping the creatures move around freely during daytime), and that created an escape route for Jade and Tabitha, who were trapped in the underground tunnels. Marielle died at the hands of the Smiley creature, and Elgin was killed by Sophia. Red lightning shot out of the graveyard and into the sky, creating storm clouds with that red lightning coursing through them. Henry almost killed Victor and Ethan, but Victor prevented that from happening. After learning that Tabitha and Jade were alive, Fatima, Boyd, and Ellis went into the tunnels. Once Tabitha and Jade were in the clear, Fatima told Boyd and Ellis to take them and escape, while she turned into a creature and used her newfound powers to keep the other creatures from going after her loved ones. In addition to all that, Sophia and the Boy in White had their first on-screen interaction, where the latter said that Sophia was gonna lose this round. Sophia disagreed, while chucking all the talismans she and Clara had collected into the trunk of one of the Faraway Trees. Based on all this, allow me to talk about what I expect to see in the fifth and final season of From.

Spoiler Alert

Town History

You all have watched Widow’s Bay, right? If you haven’t, you should go do that right now. If you have, you’ll know that it dedicated an entire flashback episode to show us what the town used to be like back in the 1700s. I want something like that from From Season 5; an entire episode focused on showing us the foundations of Fromville. We don’t know how long this place has existed. It has relics from various eras, some of them dating back to the 1700s. So, yeah, I think it’ll be interesting to know who created it, and why. I have a theory that the Man in Yellow and the Boy in White are two warring gods and they created Fromville to see who’s the best, whilst using humans like chess pieces. If that’s the case, I think it’ll be interesting to see how they zeroed in on creating Fromville, glimpses of all the cycles that the place has gone through, and how they altered the rules after each cycle. It’s the final season for crying out loud! Do we really wanna watch another round of bland character interactions and scares with zero impact? Is it too much to ask for something that doesn’t look and feel like what the show has been doing for the past 4 goddamn seasons?

The Talismans

The talisman was the residents’ biggest defence against the creatures. Sure, it didn’t work against the puppets, the reanimated Roger, or the Man in Yellow (or Sophia). But it was effective against all the creatures out there. It seems like Sophia and Clara have done a thorough job of removing all the talismans from the Township. So, how are they gonna survive the nights now? The totems don’t work on the creatures. Then how are the residents gonna protect themselves? Are the creatures capable of taking down well-secured doors and windows with ease? On top of that, there’s the issue of the fickle weather, which might lead to longer nights and shorter days; and the creatures might exploit that to kill the residents. I don’t really see a solution here. Can the talismans go from the trunk of the Faraway Tree back into the town? Because these trees sometimes do take people and things to random places. However, I don’t think Sophia would have chucked the talismans in there if there was even a one percent chance of them falling back into the hands of the residents. The showrunners have backed the residents into a corner, and I hope they don’t give them an easy out.

Bones

A major chunk of Season 4 was about getting to the Anghkooey children’s bones. Well, the protagonists have them. Now what? The Man in Yellow was very nonchalant about the fact that the residents had the bones, while the Boy in White was optimistic about it. Why? Well, the most basic assumption here is that they are the key to destroying the loop that everybody is stuck in. How, though? Cremating them? If you have seen enough horror movies and shows, you know that the only way to send a tormented soul into the afterlife is by destroying whatever’s keeping them tethered to the mortal realm. So, yeah, if it’s revealed that burning those bones into ashes and chucking them into the Lake of Tears is gonna end the residents’ torment, nobody’s gonna be surprised. However, why were they buried in the first place? Why were the Anghkooey kids sacrificed? Why do they keep appearing to Tabitha, and Tabitha alone? I hope Season 5 sheds some light on that. I know that that sounds like an obvious thing for the show to do, but given how the writers have a habit of abruptly dropping plot elements, I think it’s important to underscore the need to learn about those bones in case they forget about them.

Story-walking

Speaking of subplots that were abruptly dropped, what happened to story-walking? Julie and Randall spent so much time on figuring out how to send the former through the various chapters of Fromville’s story, Julie got attacked by one of the creatures while doing so, and was almost captured by the Man in Yellow. In the first episode of Season 4, a future version of Julie seemingly interacted with Jim to save him from dying at the hands of the Man in Yellow, but she failed, thereby kinda proving that story-walking didn’t allow the story-walker to change the narrative. Now, while Julie and Randall completely gave up on it after learning that fact, I am interested in knowing if story-walking is a viable solution to any of the problems that Fromville has presented before the characters. In the polaroid that got Elgin killed, some fans have theorized that you can see Julie standing right near Sophia. We don’t know when that photo was taken, but it clearly has to be from before the Matthews actually stumbled into Fromville. If Julie showed up in a photo, that means she was physically present there. The show has decided that it’s gonna solve all of its mysteries in the final season, but given how complicated time travel can be, I won’t be shocked if they drop the story-walking stuff altogether.

Elgin

A big deal was made out of finding Jim’s body, because he was one of the primary characters of the show. Do I think that an equal amount of time will be dedicated to Elgin? Yes, but not because he was one of the primary characters of the show. It’s because his death has happened under very mysterious circumstances. I mean, most of the deceased characters have died from creature attacks. The pastor croaked without any reason, so nobody was able to figure out that Sophia had choked the life out of him. However, Elgin had blood coming out of his eyes and mouth. Now, I don’t know how efficient Clara is at hiding the clues, and more importantly, covering up a murder committed by Sophia. But based on everything I have seen about her so far, I don’t think she’s a very good accessory to a murder. Therefore, when we are talking about whether or not Elgin will be found, it’s not a matter of “if” but “when.” And when he’s discovered, I suppose there’s gonna be an in-depth investigation into what might’ve led to his death. Or maybe the pressure is gonna get to Clara and she’ll blurt out that the Man in Yellow is walking amongst them in the form of Sophia.

Fatima

After giving birth to the Smiley creature, Fatima spent most of Season 4 wondering about what she had done and then building that damned Golem. Towards the tail-end of the season, she figured out the connection she had with the Smiley creature, which allowed her to save Kenny from a particularly sticky situation. But after doing so, these varicose veins started to show up all over her belly. To make matters worse, Clara gave Fatima a drink that was spiked with Sophia’s blood, which pushed her to the final stage of her metamorphosis: Fatima became one of the creatures. However, she didn’t attack the residents, instead keeping the creatures from attacking Boyd, Ellis, Tabitha, and Jade as they escaped the tunnels with the Anghkooey children’s bones. So, what’s next for her? Is she gonna kill all the creatures? Are creatures capable of killing other creatures? We haven’t seen that yet, but since the creatures probably have the same power sets, it’s possible that that’s the quest that Fatima is gonna embark on. I don’t think there’s a way to reverse the monsterizing process, but that’s not gonna stop Ellis from trying to bring back his Fatima. I have a theory that the more Fatima keeps transforming into a creature to tackle all the other creatures, the closer she’s gonna get to acting like the creatures. Instead of protecting the residents, she’ll become like one of them. If that turns out to be true, it’s possible that in Season 5, Ellis will need to put down Fatima.

Fate Of The Residents

After beating around the bush for 4 goddamn seasons, I hope that Season 5 gives a proper resolution to the residents who have been stuck in Fromville for lord knows how long. They have to, right? The showrunners can’t give them an ambiguous ending. Right? Right?! To be honest, just be prepared for the writers to not commit to anything and actually go for an ending that doesn’t resolve anything. Because they know that if they go for a bitter conclusion, people are gonna be mad. If they go for a saccharine conclusion, a whole other group of people are gonna be mad. So, yeah, they might flip-flop around and bring things to a close by leaving the ending open to the audience’s interpretation. If the whole thing ends up being a dream of one of the characters, I am gonna be truly angry. I hate when that happens in movies, and if I see that after 4 seasons of a show, I’m gonna combust spontaneously. I am gonna pray that the showrunners commit to something solid, and give the characters the payoff they deserve. You know what’s gonna be particularly bittersweet? If all the residents return to their normal lives, find it to be boring, and then start yearning for the Fromville life. Anyway, those are just my thoughts about what I want to see in Season 5 of From. If you have any thoughts on the same, feel free to let me know through the comments section below.
