KUCHING, July 15: The stage is set for a vibrant celebration of culture as 543 performers from Sarawak and Singapore come together for the Kuching Festival Folk Dance 2026, showcasing traditional dances, music and colourful costumes representing diverse communities.
Organised by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), the event will take place on July 26 at 7pm at the State Hockey Stadium in Kuching.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said this year’s festival will feature 32 performing groups, comprising 25 local groups and seven outstation groups from Kuching, Serian, Sri Aman, Sibu, Lundu and Singapore.
“The Kuching Festival Folk Dance has become an important platform for promoting cultural appreciation, strengthening unity among communities and preserving our traditional performing arts.
“As our city continues to develop, it is equally important that we safeguard the traditions and cultural heritage that define our identity. Folk dance is more than just a performance.
“It tells the stories of our communities, reflects our history and values, and connects one generation with the next,” he said during a press conference at the MBKS headquarters today.
Wee said the festival also supports MBKS’ commitment to building an age-friendly city by encouraging participation across all age groups.
He noted that senior citizens play a vital role as custodians of traditional dances, music and customs, while younger generations help ensure these cultural practices continue to thrive.
“By providing a platform where the younger generation can learn from and perform alongside them, we ensure that our cultural heritage continues to flourish for generations to come,” he said.
Wee added that bringing together performing groups from different regions creates opportunities for cultural exchange and enables audiences to gain a deeper appreciation of Malaysia’s rich and diverse traditions.
He also encouraged the public to attend the event, noting that admission is free and inviting everyone to join in the celebration of culture, friendship and community spirit.
Also present were MBKS Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili and councillors. — DayakDaily
