If you take a Grab in Malaysia, your phone is now actively listening to help keep you safe. Grab has finished rolling out AudioProtect nationwide, turning on automatic in ride audio recording for every single trip. The goal is to protect both passengers and drivers by catching emergencies as they happen and creating clear proof when arguments break out over who said what.
Instead of waiting for you to press a panic button during trouble, the Grab app does the work in the background. As soon as a ride starts, the app begins recording and using software to listen for signs of danger, such as shouting, screaming, or the heavy crash sound of an accident. It also tracks strange route changes or long unexpected stops. If something seems wrong, the app sends a pop up asking if you are okay. If no one replies, Grab can call you directly or dispatch emergency help to your location.
The obvious concern here is privacy, as nobody wants an app secretly listening to their daily conversations. Grab handles this by keeping the actual recording locked inside your phone rather than sending a live audio stream to its office. The app filters out regular noises like traffic, music, and normal talking. It only uploads a short fifteen second clip before and after a detected problem. If your trip ends normally with no reported issues, those audio files stay encrypted and get deleted off the device after five days.
Having a recorded log gives passengers and drivers real protection when things go wrong. It stops situations from turning into a guessing game of one person’s word against another, which makes it much easier to hold bad actors accountable. It also means you get faster help if you ever end up in a real crash or dangerous situation where you cannot physically reach for your phone.
