Chery Malaysia recalls Omoda 5 again over rear axle issue: How to check if you're affected

Chery Malaysia has begun the recall process for the pre-facelift (FL) version of Omoda 5. While this is the 2nd major recall announcement for the SUV (the 1st recall happened in 2024), the reason is the same: Omoda 5’s rear axle.

The recall announcement was published on Chery Malaysia’s social media platforms several hours after the Road Transport Department (JPJ) said that it has temporarily suspended Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) for the Omoda 5 following a recent incident in Johor where the SUV’s rear axle detached while on the move.

JPJ also said that it has instructed Chery to identify and recall all units that are potentially at risk. Meanwhile, Chery said that all affected vehicles will receive comprehensive inspections, and any required follow-up actions, including component replacements, will be free of charge.

Omoda 5 was originally launched in July 2023 but has since been replaced by a facelifted model called Chery 05 last September. Chery 05 is equipped with a multi-link rear suspension system as opposed to the torsion beam setup on the Omoda 5.

Similarly, the fully electric Omoda E5 also comes with multi-link suspension on its rear. All three Chery models are locally assembled (CKD) at Inokom’s plant in Kulim, Kedah.
