Antony Gormley’s ‘Body Buildings’ Opens In November At Galleria Continua Beijing

‘Body Buildings’ marks Antony Gormley’s third solo exhibition in Beijing

Galleria Continua is presenting “Body Buildings,” Antony Gormley’s third solo exhibition at Beijing’s 798 Art District. This captivating showcase follows his previous exhibitions, “Another Singularity” (2009) and “Host” (2016), and delves into the intricate relationship between humanity and the increasingly vertical world we inhabit.

At the heart of the exhibition is “Resting Place II,” a stunning installation featuring 132 life-size bodies crafted from fired clay bricks. This immersive piece invites visitors to navigate a labyrinth of forms that represent the human body at rest, our fundamental dwelling. Gormley describes the brick as a “physical pixel,” symbolising both stability and vulnerability.

As viewers move through the gallery, the dynamic interaction between the sculpted bodies and the audience creates a rich tapestry of subjective experiences. Gormley reflects on this work as a commentary on different types of abandonment: the carefree relaxation of childhood and the dislocation faced by migrants seeking new homes.

The exhibition also features a series of drawings, including “Singularity X” and “Event VII,” which explore themes of light and darkness as experienced within and around the body. “Body Buildings” serves as a thought-provoking examination of our current existence, inviting viewers to reflect on the ways our bodies and environments intersect.
