Repeat offender in Kuching sentenced to 5 years' jail, whipping for drug abuse

KUCHING (Jan 20): The Sessions Court here today sentenced a repeat drug offender to five years in prison and two strokes of the cane for drug abuse.
Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi ordered for 33-year-old Mohammad Syukri Ismail’s sentence to take effect from the date of his arrest on Jan 17.
In addition, he ordered that Mohammad Syukri be placed under police supervision for two years, upon completion of his custodial sentence.
Mohammad Syukri pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39C(1)(b) of the same Act.
The Section provides for a prison sentence of between five and seven years, as well as up to three strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
Based on the facts of the case, Mohammad Syukri, was tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine at the Kuching District Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department office at 12.05pm on March 20, 2023.
Prior to this, he had three convictions under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, dated Feb 6, 2023.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Cynthia Emmelda Jerry, while Mohammad Syukri was unrepresented by counsel.
