KUCHING, Feb 4: The flood situation in Sarawak is showing signs of improvement, with the number of evacuees dropping to 6,160 at 32 relief centres (PPS) as of 8pm tonight.
This marks a significant decrease from the 9,314 victims housed in 40 PPS at the same time last night (Feb 3).
According to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) secretariat, 48 PPS have been deactivated so far as floodwaters continue to recede, allowing many displaced residents to return home.
Bintulu remains the hardest-hit division, with 2,429 evacuees still seeking shelter. Miri follows with 1,372 victims, while Sibu (828), Serian (792), Samarahan (426), and Mukah (313) also continue to host displaced residents.
Adding to the crisis, SDMC reported that 170 individuals affected by landslides in Miri and Bintulu have also been relocated to the same PPS as flood victims for their safety.
Meanwhile, in Sibu, the Dewan Datuk Aaron PPS in Bawan Kanowit remains operational, accommodating 35 fire victims from Rumah Paulus Yan who have yet to secure alternative housing.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as relief efforts persist to assist those affected. – DayakDaily
