'Crazy Texas' Movie Ending Explained & Full Story: What Happened To Lily And Avery?
Director Francis Juarez’s latest thriller, Crazy Texas, is difficult to make sense of, not because of narrative complexity, no, but because the chaotic confusion arising from the absolutely atrocious acting, mindless jumbling of random plot threads, and horrible dialogue makes it impossible to make sense of the movie. Budgetary concerns are no issue if the project itself is made with care; unfortunately, despite the good intentions of the makers, that is nowhere felt in the case of Crazy Texas. Aside from a few elements in its cinematography, this incoherent mess of an indie thriller has no silver lining.

Why did Lilly want Avery to be proven mentally unwell?Crazy Texas opens in an unnamed small town in Texas, on the occasion of Christmas Eve, as Trevor Baldwin, the local psychiatrist’s nefarious plan, comes into focus. Religion seems to hold a major position in the lives of the townsfolk, so much so that even girls in their mid-twenties are seen singing carols to the elderly and getting candy in exchange. Anyway, Trevor takes help from a shady local guy, Rocky, to abduct sister duo Avery and Lilly, and evading detection by the authorities, takes them to his hideout located at the back of his office. The seemingly unhinged, psychopathic Trevor begins to torment Avery by questioning the integrity of her faith and performing satanic rituals. On one occasion, Rocky decides to pay Trevor a visit to get his due, only for the crazed lunatic to ruthlessly murder him and hide his corpse.
Apparently, following the deaths of their grandparents, Francisco and Maria—the sister duo—they inherited a humongous sum, which was divided between them. While Avery, the more emotionally driven and pious of the duo, wanted to donate her money to the church, Lilly wanted the money to be used for a better purpose and to take care of her sister using it. Both the sisters visited Trevor to seek help in processing the grief they were experiencing, and Avery’s mental constitution was not in the best shape. Lilly, concerned about her sister, gravitated more towards Trevor’s mention of an experimental procedure to unlock one’s mind using herbal concoctions. However, at the same time, he had confessed that in the past, using such means had almost gotten him in trouble. Trevor had suggested Lilly use truly unconventional means, which reach the realm of the metaphysical, using the theological findings of his grandfather. Lilly, willing to take care of her sister using the inheritance money, wanted Trevor to use his bizarre methods to prove Avery to be mentally unfit to be entrusted with the inheritance. Trevor had mentioned that events required to trigger such a change in Avery will have to be staged as genuinely as possible, and she has to follow Trevor’s lead—and Lilly agreed to his proposal. However, as Trevor’s plan is set in motion following the abduction, Lilly realizes she’s in for more than she bargained for.
What Did Trevor’s Grandfather Find? From the beginning, Trevor humiliated and ridiculed Avery’s faith, mentioning the gospel spread by the church throughout the last two millennia is nothing but lies and deceit. Trevor had his own plans involving the two sisters, as he wanted to share his dark truth with the world—the details of which remain vague and incomprehensible till the end. What we do learn from the piecemeal information and Trevor’s own confession is that his belief in institutionalized Christianity left forever after he lost his brothers, wife, and entire family to a certain tragedy, and he cursed the Almighty for allowing that to happen. A disillusioned, jaded Trevor mentions that the church has twisted the narrative through history to assert its power above all and has hidden the truth of the creation myth, of Satan, Lilith, Adam, and Eve. Trevor reveals that his grandfather had gotten his hands on parts of the Dead Sea Scrolls—which are believed by many to be the earliest and original manuscript of the Bible—and he states that the church wanted to hide it at all costs to keep their narrative from getting exposed. However, Trevor had learned about the contents of the scrolls from his grandfather’s journal, where the secrets of the Mandragora plant and using the method of séance to traverse to limbo—the space between Hell and Heaven—were recorded. The journal opened Trevor’s eyes to the truth, and by breaking Avery’s faith, he wants to use her as a vessel to share his truth.
Meanwhile, Trevor occasionally ventures outside to cover up Rocky’s sudden disappearance by speaking with the authorities and speaks with the sisters’ parents to comfort them to curb any chance of suspicion. Olivia, Avery’s close friend, had tried to find the sisters, and questioning Trevor about the situation, she grows suspicious of his creepy behavior. Olivia just randomly decides to use an ouija board with her friends to learn the whereabouts of Avery and realizes that her friend needs help. However, none of her friends agree to go search Trevor’s place, and writing a note for Avery, Olivia takes it upon herself to rescue them.
Trevor is confirmed to be a Satanist when he starts performing a strange ritual on Avery to invoke Lucifer before getting interrupted by Avery’s friend, Olivia’s reappearance. This time, Trevor sneakily incapacitates Olivia using anesthetic and brings her to his hideout.
What Did Avery See In The Limbo?Trevor’s Satanist ritual provides instructions, and the usage of the herbal concoction takes Avery to the limbo, from where she needs to bring Morning Star, an insignia representing the Devil himself. It remains unknown whether it was Trevor’s hallucinogenic Mandragora herbal tea that prompted Avery to see a phantasmagoric world or whether she truly went beyond the physical realm. Anyway, the mystical, dark world with a morbid beauty of its own is definitely the best part of the movie. Avery meets a strange woman inside the limbo, who asks her to follow the light to get back to her world. Now, the identity of this lady remains unknown; she could be Avery’s mental projection of whatever hope she has left to escape such hellish punishment.
However, as Avery returns to normalcy with no morning star at her disposal, Trevor becomes furious and decides to kill a still unconscious Olivia to teach the sisters a lesson. Lilly, who’d already started believing that things had gone too far, now fears for her sister’s life and requests Trevor to speak with her alone, hinting at their previous discussion.
What Happened To Avery And Lily?Lilly confronts Trevor about taking things to such extreme lengths, but it is already quite clear to her that Trevor simply exploited both of them to serve his own needs. Putting Trevor’s trust in her to her advantage, Lilly murders him by bashing his head with a hammer and strangling him to death.
Days later, Avery is seen hospitalized, still recuperating from her traumatic experiences, and Lilly confesses her actions after apologizing to her sister. Trevor had an antidote with him to flush the Mandragora out of Avery’s system if need be, which Lilly uses to help Avery to finally get rid of her mental barriers. Later, both the sisters are seen sharing their prayers and respects in front of Olivia’s grave, in remembrance of their friend who sacrificed her life to rescue them.
Trevor might have passed away, but his dark influence remains as a persistent presence on Avery and Lily’s family. Their parents, Nicole and Josh, who were previously seen adhering to Trevor’s words with sincerity and belief, have gotten their hands on the Black Books, the journal of Trevor’s grandfather, which, in a sense, is the Bible of Satanism. Nicole and Josh seem to be losing their grip over reality as the movie ends on a cliffhanger.
