'Sampung Utos Kay Josh' Movie Ending Explained & Full Story: What happens To Josh?

The thing about God is, you can’t believe you’re his child and just expect Daddy to be taking care of your problems. Marius Talampas’ black comedy Sampung Utos Kay Josh feels like the director is playing God’s advocate and arguing how his mysterious ways always have a deeper meaning. The movie feels tolerable thanks to some absurd comedy from time to time, but the relentless preaching is simply too much to sit through. Understandably, the audience isn’t supposed to support the moral philosophy of this movie and, basically, of a whole religion, but the story can’t help but force that spoon down your throat. So, here we are discussing what happens in the movie I’ve been rolling my eyes at.

Spoilers Ahead

What happens in the movie?

Sampung Utos Kay Josh begins with Josh, he goes to church, helps beggars and underprivileged kids, and lives the life of a good Christian. Josh is a young man who’s obsessed with Jesus and the rules of the Ten Commandments. Josh follows every word, and so far his life has been comfortable enough for him to think that God loves him. He keeps getting promotions thanks to his girlfriend’s father, Mr. Montez. Josh’s girlfriend, Ella, is beautiful, and everybody swoons over her. He has great friends, and his hobby is making TikTok videos praising the Lord. His innocence has no bounds, as you see him rubbing a vibrator all over his face. Josh is also chaste, as he clearly tells Ella that they must remain virgins until their marriage. But hey, he goes to church and helps people, and at least he’s a good person; that’s someone we can try to root for.

What pushes Josh to go against God?

Josh thought nothing could go wrong in his life as long as he was diligent and devoted to Jesus. But life had other plans, and Josh didn’t see it coming. He approved a number of loan applications in a short period, and most of the borrowers declared bankruptcy; a few even went into hiding. Mr. Montez turned his back on Josh, and the NBI arrested him on suspicion of fraud. Ironically, an officer tells Josh that he is going to pay for his sins. Ella visits him in jail and breaks up with him, and Josh loses everything he earned. When he finally gets bail, an impersonator breaks out of the jail and frees every convict inside. Josh’s friends see him tied up inside, and the poor man gets to know that his mother is in the hospital battling stage four cancer.

Josh’s mind also goes into a place where he encounters a silly Satan who punishes him for pretty much everything he’s ever done. This encounter between Josh and Satan is just a sign of Josh’s fear of God and his need to be sin-free. When he’s sitting in the hospital thinking about what he did wrong to deserve these horrible things, Satan sets him free and encourages him to disobey God. Josh sets out on a mission to break the Ten Commandments.

What happens to Josh in the beerhouse?

Josh breaks the rule of keeping the Sabbath day holy, and instead of going to church, he decides to take his friends to a beerhouse instead. Since Josh is broke now, he goes to a wake first, where he gambles to earn money. His friend Zoren helps him to win most of the hands, and in the process, Josh also swears at Jesus (one of the gamblers), breaking the rule of not taking the Lord’s name in vain. In the beer house, Josh’s friend Eli sets him up with one of the hookers named Genesis. Josh hopes to break the law of chastity by having intercourse, but his morals get the better of him. Josh asks Genesis why she’s doing this job, and he’s surprised when Genesis answers that she only does it for the money, not for survival. He tries to shame her by using the example of Mary Magdalene and how she had to be exorcised by Jesus. Josh thinks she does the devil’s work, but Genesis reminds him that Magdalene was one of the closest followers of Jesus. Genesis then walks out on Josh and performs a dance in front of the crowd, ending the performance by swearing at Josh. Josh fails to break one of the commandments, and he also gets humbled by someone smarter.

Does Josh follow any other religion?

Josh reads the commandments, sees the rule about not worshipping other Gods, and decides to break free of it. He breaks multiple statues of Jesus and thinks of worshipping a new god. Eli takes Josh and the other friends to a cult, where a godman claims to be a prophet himself. But soon, a fire breaks out, and people are running for their lives, topless. The cult leader himself asks his followers to pray to Jesus, and Josh is perplexed by the scene. He begs people to worship the cult leader instead of Jesus, but nobody cares. Comically enough, Eli urinates just enough to calm the fire and everyone walks out safely. Josh is disappointed furthermore when he figures out that the cult leader is a pedophile. Josh kicks a plant outside the house, and he comes back to pick it up and water it. Josh’s inability to actually do horrible things becomes the new problem. Even though he doesn’t find a new god, Josh finds out that the case against him is being dropped due to lack of evidence.

Does Josh steal from the bank and break a commandment?

Even though Josh is free of criminal charges, his mother’s enormous hospital bill lands him in deep trouble. None of his friends have any money, and Josh feels now is the best time to oppose God by breaking the rule against stealing. Josh puts a wig on and goes to rob the bank he once worked in. The lazy security guard, Bart, stops Josh for some comedic relief and eventually lets him go. Josh wants revenge on Mr. Montez, and he sneaks into his office to steal. The CCTV operator never looks at the screen once, and even when Eli comes to the room, Josh pretends to be Montez by wearing his suit and facing away. He finds a key to a locker in the pocket of Montez’s suit, and he breaks into the locker while the CCTV guy is still blowing off his job. Eli uncovers a substantial amount of cash in bundles and tapes it all together inside his hoodie. Just when he’s about to leave, his friends recognize him, and he’s stalled. All of a sudden, two actual robbers break into the bank and take everyone hostage. But one robber, the wife, goes into labor and screams in pain. Josh attempts to escape, but the other robber shoots at him. Josh still survives thanks to Bart, who, for some reason, decided to jump and save Josh’s life. I’m only mocking this because he was shown to be a coward and lazy all this while, and it doesn’t make sense for his character to sacrifice himself for someone else. However, Bart is shot in the thigh, and Josh thanks him and walks out of the bank with the money on him. But he’s, after all, the number-one fan of Jesus; his sense of righteousness prevents him from abandoning people in life-and-death situations.

Does Josh truly have a vision of Jesus?

Josh swoops in and uses YouTube to deliver the baby. However, the unskippable ad delays things for a bit. Josh’s friends and a few other people also jump in to help, and the baby is born. But during the birth, Bart had bled too much to survive, and Josh failed to save the man who saved his life. He still decides to undo the only wrong thing he did, and he puts the money back inside the locker, along with his body hair stuck on the tape. Josh now sits in the hospital, thinking about the debt, and his mother wakes up to basically speak to her son for the last time. An emotional Josh asks his mother why, despite doing everything by the Lord’s word, they still have to suffer. His mother then explains to him how even Job, the most devout of the Lord’s followers, had to suffer to prove his loyalty. The whole sequence preaches that God will never abandon you, no matter how intense your pain may be. His mother takes her final breath, and she’s grateful to God for making Josh a pure soul.

In Sampung Utos Kay Josh’s ending, Josh finds himself in his visions again, but this time, he’s in heaven. He encounters someone in a white dress whom he initially thinks is Satan, but he soon realizes it is not. It’s Jesus, who’s just not in the mood to explain why he looks the same as Satan. He reassures Josh of his kindness and empathy and makes sure to tell Josh that he’s done a good job. Jesus answers Josh’s questions about faith, highlighting that life isn’t just black and white. He emphasizes that the world is filled with a variety of colors, symbolizing the complexities and richness of existence that make faith more meaningful. Josh finally feels rewarded for his faith and beliefs, and he is approached by the NBI once again. This time, it’s to testify against Mr. Montez, who planned the robbery to cover his tracks. Josh is now the branch manager, and he heads back to the beer house to undo the last wrong thing. He throws a flower to Genesis while she performs at the beerhouse and eventually gets over the fear of having intercourse, knowing it’s not a sin.
