Selangor police: Cyberjaya student Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara’s alleged killer is housemate’s boyfriend

Selangor police have revealed that the main suspect in the murder of University of Cyberjaya student Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara (main image) is the boyfriend of one of the victim’s housemates.

Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said that with the identification of the suspect and the recovery of most of the items stolen from the victim, they believe the case has been solved.

“We are now working on strengthening the case. We will apply to extend the remand of the suspects,” Hussein said.

Maniishapriet, 20, a Bachelor of Physiotherapy student from Kuching, Sarawak, was found unconscious in her off-campus accommodation in Cyberjaya, Selangor on June 24. She was pronounced dead shortly after police arrived at the scene.

Hussein said the suspect, an unemployed man in his 20s, entered the unit using an access card and key provided by his girlfriend, who was away at the time.

“This was not his first time staying there. He entered the unit, encountered the victim, and struck her with an object, causing fatal injuries,” Hussein said.

He added that police are still investigating the motive for the murder.

Hussein said the suspect had discarded some of the stolen items, including the victim’s ATM card, laptop, and mobile phone, but police managed to recover most of them.

“Investigations also revealed that the suspect used the victim’s bank card to purchase several items amounting to RM200,” he said.

Police have so far arrested four individuals in connection with the case — three women and a man. Authorities are seeking to extend the remand order for the suspects as investigations continue.

Maniishapriet’s uncle, lawyer Datuk Rajpal Singh, told Twentytwo13 that the family may discuss their next course of action after Maniishapriet’s final prayer this Saturday.

University of Cyberjaya, in a statement over the weekend, said it was deeply saddened by the loss of one of its students and is cooperating with the authorities.

The university’s management also said it was reviewing safety protocols for off-campus student housing and has offered counselling services to those affected by the incident.
