But thanks to some cheeky teasing from friends and a rare cultural connection, what began as casual banter eventually grew into a lasting bond and now, marriage.
It all started at Kem Paya IndahWhat started as playful teasing at a National Service training camp in 2017 has now blossomed into a beautiful love story.
A shared background and a little match-making by friends sparked the connection between Siti Suhaida Abu Bakar and her now-husband, Muhammad Arshad Muhammad Salman, both 26.
According to Kosmo!, the couple first crossed paths while attending the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) at Kem Paya Indah in Dengkil.
Both of mamak descent, they quickly became the subject of light-hearted teasing by friends and trainers alike, something that eventually brought them closer.
“We got teased for being mamak”“The first month was quite challenging because we had to wake up at 4am for daily activities,” recalled Siti Suhaida.
They started getting to know each other thanks to all the teasing from friends and trainers, who liked to match them up since they were the only mamak participants at the camp.
From campmates to life partnersAfter completing the programme, Arshad didn’t waste any time—he introduced Suhaida to his mother and grandmother soon after.
However, Suhaida only introduced him to her father after six years of being in a relationship.
The couple got engaged on 11 May 2024 and tied the knot earlier that month, on 1 May. Their wedding reception took place the next day at Dewan KT Orkid in Rawang.
A second reception from the groom’s side, themed Bollywood-style, was held on 11 May at MPAJ Pandan Indah, Ampang.
Blending cultures, one chapati at a timeDespite slight cultural differences given that Arshad is of Pakistani-mamak heritage—both families warmly embraced one another.
Suhaida also shared what drew her to Arshad which is his sweet dark complexion, his firm and principled character reminiscent of her father, and his caring nature.
Their story proves that love can blossom in the most unexpected places even at a training camp at 4 in the morning.
