Call for urgent action as overgrown monsoon drain sparks flood concerns in Stampin

KUCHING (July 3): The relevant authorities are being urged to clear the monsoon drain adjacent to Lorong Stampin Barat 4A1 here to prevent flash floods.
Making this call today, Democratic Action Party state assistant publicity secretary Michael Kong said vegetation has grown extensively along and within the drain, obstructing its natural flow.
“This level of neglect is deeply concerning, especially as such drains play a crucial role in preventing flash floods and managing stormwater discharge in residential areas,” he said in a statement following a recent visit.
Kong, who is a special assistant to DAP’s Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, noted that several concerned residents had aired their frustration to him, claiming the drain had never been properly maintained or cleared.
This neglect, he explained, has allowed thick vegetation to take root, further impeding water flow and raising the risk of water overflow during heavy rain.
Calling the situation unacceptable, he stressed that that monsoon drains are essential public infrastructure, and that it is the responsibility of the relevant authorities to ensure regular maintenance and proper functionality.
“A clogged or neglected drain poses a serious flood risk,” he warned.
He urged the relevant authorities to treat this matter with immediate urgency, stating that the drain must be cleared without further delay to ensure smooth stormwater discharge and to safeguard the homes and properties of those living nearby.
“We cannot allow negligence to become the norm when it comes to public infrastructure. The people deserve better,” he said.
Kong added that the DAP will continue to press for action until necessary steps are taken.
