A team of Malaysian doctors made history at Hospital Tunku Azizah (HTA) after successfully separating a pair of three-month-old male conjoined twins in a high-risk, 13-hour surgery involving one of the rarest forms of conjoined twinning.
The case involved Omphaloischiophagus Tetrapus Conjoined Twins, a condition so rare that the twins were joined at the abdomen and pelvis, and shared four lower limbs.
According to a social media post announcement by Hospital Tunku Azizah Corporate Communications Unit, the surgery took place on June 24, 2025, beginning at 8.30am and ending at 9.48pm.
The complete separation of the twins occurred at 5.43pm, and both infants are now reported to be stable and recovering in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
A major milestone for HTA and HKLThe surgery was led by an experienced team of specialists from HTA and Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL), including Dr Mohd Yusof Abdullah, Dato’ Dr Zakaria Zahari, Dr Intan Zarina Fakir Mohamed and Dr Phang Yee Yun.
The operation marks the fourth successful separation of conjoined twins at HTA since 2019, and the 19th such case overall in the joint history of HTA and HKL.
Hopes for a bright and healthy futureFollowing the operation, both babies are receiving round-the-clock care as they continue their recovery.
The medical team expressed hope that the children will grow up strong, healthy, and able to live full lives following the successful separation.
In the social media post, Hospital Tunku Azizah’s Corporate Communications Unit also thanked all departments involved in making the surgery a success.
Netizens and Malaysians nationwide also applauded the achievement, calling it a proud moment for the local healthcare system.
