YouTube Music getting more obvious shuffle and rewind buttons

While we wait for the bigger Now Playing redesign, YouTube Music is updating the shuffle and rewind buttons.

Previously, the shuffle and rewind buttons flanking the play controls would become a little bit bolder when active. In general, YouTube’s design language makes use of thin, outline-style icons. It wasn’t obvious in this case whether the two modes were active, with users sometimes needing to cycle through them to be sure.

Inactive state

YouTube Music still does that bolding, but there’s now a white dot underneath. It’s more obvious, while there’s no change to the song repeat (1) option. We’re seeing these new shuffle and rewind buttons as a server-side update with YouTube Music 8.26 on Android, but it’s not widely rolled out yet.

Active state: Old vs. new

Meanwhile, a “Make a quick start radio” card is rolling out to the Home feed. YTM shows eight artists that you can select and then tap “Play now” to create. “More” in the top-right corner opens the existing Radio creator that also lets you pick songs and albums.

YouTube Music has also widely rolled out “Releases for you” when you scroll to the bottom of the album page on Android, iOS, and web.
