14 Cool Gelato Spots to Visit Around KL & PJ

Our picks of all the gelato specialists that serve some of the most satisfying scoops in the KL and PJ area.

You never need an excuse to get yourself a sweet treat, but in case you were looking for one, you can always blame the heat. We know cakes, doughnuts, or even fruity smoothies are great for kicking those dessert cravings, but there’s nothing quite like a scoop of gelato! Luckily for you, the KL and PJ area is jam-packed with gelato specialists that all have a charm of their own, putting their own twist on the Italian staple—including some that are unapologetically Malaysian.

While the word “gelato” itself may mean ice cream in Italian, its “genetic makeup” is anything but! Ice cream uses none other than cream as its base. On the other hand, the main building block in gelato recipes is milk! Gelato is also churned at a slower rate than ice cream. Therefore, less air is incorporated into the mixture, leaving the gelato with a denser, more elastic texture. Plus, the flavour possibilities are quite literally endless, which makes the dessert that much easier to love! Now that your crash course on gelato is done, get reading to find your next destination for gelato in KL and PJ!

1. PAOLO PAOLO GELATO

Since opening its first doors at The Five in 2023, Paolo Paolo Gelato has garnered a cult following for its creamy scoops and distinctive flavour selection. It has since expanded to a total of three locations with the second and third popping up in Taman Paramount and The Exchange TRX respectively. While the key flavours such as Bacio and Super Vanilla remain in the daily rotation, you’ll see a handful of special seasonal creations take their turns in the chiller’s spotlight through the days. Each cup or cone is topped off with a dollop of any flavour you choose, so you can get a little taster of which one to get on your next trip!

Luxury dessert maker Venchi may be known for its chocolatey creations, but its gelato definitely deserves a spot in the limelight too. Of course, their signature chocolate-based flavours are always stellar, but its seasonal creations have been the talk of the town whenever they’re in rotation. We’re talking tangy tangerine and passionfruit for the summer and even a lush tribute to the King of Fruits for durian season.
