Anwar calls for smooth Ramadan bazaar registration to curb exploitation, ensure fair participation

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today called on all parties involved in the registration of Ramadan bazaar traders to work collaboratively to ensure the process is efficient, transparent, and free from exploitation.

Speaking to reporters after Friday prayers at Jumhuriah Mosque, Anwar highlighted Petaling Jaya as a benchmark for effective bazaar management, citing its online registration system as a means to limit the influence of middlemen and commission-taking agents.

“This is a problem we are facing. Ramadan bazaars provide an opportunity for the public, especially lower-income groups, to run businesses and earn additional income,” he said.

“Those involved in the registration process should cooperate to ensure the system runs more smoothly and to prevent people from taking commissions.”

Anwar noted that while policy-level measures are in place to curb commission-taking, ground-level implementation remains disorganised. He said Petaling Jaya’s approach, which allows wider participation through online registration while maintaining clean, well-managed facilities, could serve as a model for other municipalities.

He added that if local councils and state governments were willing to cooperate, he would raise the matter with Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming to further improve Ramadan bazaar facilities, including water supply arrangements and cleanliness.

“As we know, waste management enforcement began yesterday, and anyone who disposes of rubbish improperly will face action, including prosecution and fines for traders,” Anwar said.

The previous day, the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) commenced enforcement under the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672), issuing offence notices to 42 individuals for littering in public areas.

The Prime Minister’s remarks underscore the government’s dual focus on fostering economic opportunities for small traders while maintaining public hygiene and accountability during Malaysia’s annual Ramadan festivities. - January 2, 2026
