'Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale' Season 2 Ending Explained & Finale Recap: What Is Redhaven?

The ending of Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale season 2 sees the witches and the “mundanes” somewhat face off after so many months of unrest. Angela has been wanting to pass a bill that prevents witches from roaming free and locks them into a box that others them. If one witch does wrong, all of them are to be feared, right? On the other hand, this season saw Lachlan Frey, Harper’s father, return to his “family” in a completely new turn of events, giving us some context on why Sarah may have chosen to raise Harper alone. We also ended up losing some beloved characters from season one, namely Ryan and Pierre, both playing huge roles in the lives of Maggie and Sarah, respectively. But will the ladies be able to get revenge? The show has definitely been quite fascinating to watch, and I’m not sure why it’s only 6 episodes long this season, because I feel like this is the kind of thing that could’ve easily worked in an 8-parter of 45 minutes each. There’s witchcraft, there’s romance, there’s fear, there’s friendship, and so much more packed in a show that prominently features one type of people oppressing another.

Spoiler Alert

What Happens to Robert?

Episode 6 begins with Robert being found by the police, with Lachlan’s insignia stamp in his pocket. This makes Robert an immediate suspect in everything that’s gone down. Maggie was already suspecting him anyway, but this really cements him as the bad guy. But to make matters worse, it appears he’s been in the know about Luka’s involvement in witchcraft. He’s literally protecting him, but why? Well, because he thinks Luka’s the exact kind of witch he needs for his anarchist ways. Luka mentions a Redhaven, which we later found out was a group of witches who started out as good people, starting a revolution for the witches, but then were not happy with the idea of mundane rules. Everybody assumed Redhaven died centuries ago, but they appear to still be around, and Lachlan is desperate to keep them alive. Robert might still be alive, but he is now lifeless and will never recover, thanks to what Lachlan did to him. This really makes me wonder if his intentions are right or not. Plus, the Moot will solve this mystery

Lachlan lets Luka go for the time being in the hopes of fixing this mess, but it’s already too late, because Sarah and Harper know what happened to Bea, so he has a lot of explaining to do. On the other hand, with what Angela has decided to do, the witches all now have to declare themselves and get verified to keep their lives going. All her life, ever since Harper was born, Sarah has been trying to keep Harper safe, doing whatever she can in that pursuit. That’s why she didn’t want her to have the grimoire or reveal that she’s a witch. In fact, Harper herself knew from a young age not to give away her secret, hence tattooing herself and learning spells quietly. It appears Sarah has come to the realization that she can’t always protect her child, even though she is basically her life, her raison d’etre.

What Happens With Maggie?

Now Maggie’s witness statement is basically a waste, because she’s unreliable thanks to her connection with witches. Maggie goes to Sarah to talk about how she made a mistake by concealing Harper’s magic, because it has ruined her credibility. Maggie becomes determined to get Luka arrested, but she can’t do so without an actual witness. Bea wakes up in the hospital, and the DCI tries to get a statement from her about Luka; however, Angela immediately calls it slander, and Bea can’t admit the truth in front of her anyway. Meanwhile, Sarah agrees to Lachlan’s plan to leave Sanctuary, because she doesn’t want them to take her or her daughter’s DNA. All of this leads to Maggie being really upset with Sarah after she learns about Lachlan and his Redhaven and how Lachlan is now not bound anymore.

What Is Redhaven?

Somehow, in the middle of all of this, Robert decided to make Sarah his successor, because he thinks she’ll be able to identify the threat from within. However, Sarah refuses, because she has other priorities. Having said that, though, Bridget seems to have been blinded by Angela, so much so that she thinks her best friend is threatening her. Meanwhile, Maggie gathers information about Redhaven and tells the DCI that Lachlan is trying to spark a resurgence of this resistance movement from back in the day. The insignia is that of Redhaven. Lachlan was tracking witches across the country, so it becomes pretty clear that Luka is being protected by someone, and that someone has to be Lachlan, or maybe there’s a high chance he’s being manipulated by the older man who sold him the dream of freedom and Redhaven. At the same time, Lachlan is proving Maggie right by manipulating Harper into trusting him. To be fair, they’ve already got the same ideas in mind, but will she realize that there’s more to her father than just a good witch?

What Does Luka Do?

When Harper and Lachlan go to the hidden location of Redhaven, Luka’s there, and the two kids get into a witch fight. Luka learns Harper is a witch, and Harper realizes her father is protecting a murderer. But Lachlan immediately points out how it’ll be a victory for them when they reveal in the town hall during Angela’s victory lap that her son’s a witch too. Well, this is exactly what happens. Luka admits to Harper that he sent those notes to their house because he thought her mother deserved a magical child, basically himself, because everyone believed Harper was a mundane.

Anyway, the next thing you know, everybody is at Angela’s joyous occasion, and she’s giving a speech about the laws she’s just come up with. It’s ironic that she talks about how Luka has been traumatized by Sarah’s thoughts and words, but in fact, he’s obsessed with Sarah, and she’s his idol. This is when Lachlan reveals the truth, and Bea even admits to what happened. This is when Angela reveals to Luka that he was adopted, but more importantly, it might be the same witch who stole her husband from her. Angela says she doesn’t know who Luka is because he’s a murderer, but also tells him he’s not her blood, finally saying she’d never have adopted him had she known he was a witch. But this makes him really upset, and he attacks his own mother, preventing Sarah from helping, but she manages to pull through. Sarah once again proves she’s a good person by saving Angela’s life.

Now, it seems that while it’s certain Luka killed Ryan, the person who killed Pierre was wearing gloves, and Lachlan was wearing similar gloves. Additionally, Luka ended up draining people of their energy and killing them; it’s not just regular old murder. I can’t tell if I’ve missed something here. Now, Lachlan tells Sarah that he was protecting Luka to make sure Harper stayed safe. Making him believe that he was on his side so that there would be no more threats towards Harper. Meanwhile, Maggie loses her job, but at least Devereaux admits he’d have done the same thing as her, still letting her go.

In A Witch’s Tale’s ending, the family splits up because Sarah says she won’t be going with Lachlan and Harper. Sarah won’t forgive Lachlan for what he did, because she doesn’t believe in his cause; all he wants is anarchy. That’s why he kept Luka under wraps instead of reporting him. But somehow there’s still love between them, and she trusts him with her daughter, asking him to protect their child for good. Finally, Sarah is letting her daughter go, no longer trying to keep her safe forever. Somehow, despite all this, Sarah is still in love with Lachlan. Also, Sarah finally gives her daughter the Grimoire, but what if this is a mistake, considering she’s going with Lachlan? I do think Harper is strong enough to fight even her own father if he turns out to be a rotten apple. Now, while Sarah initially denied the Moot, she is now stepping into her new role as leader, after all of this, because that’s the path she’s chosen for herself. Can I just say, I love that outfit on her. While Lachlan believes anarchy is the only way to keep witches safe, I think Sarah finally knows she can break the system from within. She is, after all, a natural leader.
