KUCHING (March 21): About 30,000 guests from various faiths, cultures and communities attended the Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house hosted by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi at Astana Negeri Sarawak on Saturday, reflecting the state’s enduring spirit of unity and harmony.
Among those present was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kuching, Dato Dr Simon Poh, who described the gathering as a meaningful occasion that captures the true identity of Sarawak.
“This open house is something truly amazing because it reflects who we are as Sarawakians,” he told reporters.
Poh said the event highlighted the close ties among the state’s diverse communities, noting that people of different faiths often celebrate each other’s festivals.
“Today is special because it is Hari Raya and Tun has invited us. Together with Unifor (Unit for Other Religions), including its director Datuk Georgina Apphia Ngau, we came to celebrate this occasion with him,” he said.
He added that the governor symbolises unity for all Sarawakians regardless of race or religion.
“In the bigger picture, he is the governor for all the people of Sarawak — for all races, religions and cultures. He brings us together and even visits our houses of worship and celebrations,” he said, adding that the visit was also to convey well wishes and prayers for the governor’s continued health.
Poh stressed that the spirit of togetherness seen during Hari Raya should continue throughout the year.
“Let this spirit not only be for Hari Raya, but for all celebrations so that we can continue to celebrate together as one Sarawak family,” he added.
Meanwhile, Shankar Ram Asnani, chairman of the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Association Kuching, described the open house as a beautiful example of unity in diversity.
“You see people from different cultures and racial backgrounds coming together to celebrate. That is how it should be,” he said.
He added that Sarawak’s strength lies in the bonds formed across communities.
“In Sarawak, we must not forget our ancestors. We started this journey together and we must continue to bond and unite,” he said, noting that the state has long upheld a culture of mutual respect and harmony.
Another visitor, Henry Chuo, said he was glad to join the large crowd visiting the governor on the first day of Hari Raya.
“I’m happy to see so many people here. Even though it’s hot, the Raya spirit is still very much alive,” he said, while wishing Muslims celebrating the festival Selamat Hari Raya.
