Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo says bad actors exploiting social media must be tackled, warning that the digital landscape must not be weaponised to sow disunity.
KUALA LUMPUR: Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo has praised the police for their increasing adoption of digital tools to combat cybercrime, while issuing a stern warning against those using online platforms to incite anger and instability.
Speaking at the 219th Police Day celebration for Sikh police personnel at Gurdwara Sahib Polis High Street, Gobind emphasised that as technology advances, it must remain a force for good rather than a tool for scams or social division.
“We cannot allow certain individuals or groups to create unrest in the digital world. We have seen manufactured postings on social media that only serve to fuel anger. These are mostly postings by cowards who hide behind anonymous accounts,” said Gobind.
“We must take down such bad actors. And I know we cannot tackle such crimes in isolation. As such, we must work hand in hand to create a safer Malaysia.”
Among those present were Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh, organising committee chairman SAC Ravindar Singh, and former Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Amar Singh.
Reflecting on the duty of the force, the minister reminded officers that their badges represent a profound responsibility that demands uncompromising integrity.
“The public’s trust is the most valuable asset, which must be preserved through clean and fair service,” Gobind noted.
“At the same time, the task of maintaining peace is not merely a routine, but a national responsibility.”
He underscored that in Malaysia’s multicultural society, trust serves as the foundation for effective cooperation.
“When the public feels a personal connection to their local police, they are more likely to act as the ‘eyes and ears’ of the force, providing crucial intelligence that leads to crime prevention.”
Gobind highlighted the ongoing collaboration between his ministry and the police, spanning years of working together on human rights, justice, and cybersecurity.
“Such a close relationship creates a feedback loop. When the community feels empowered to speak to their local police, it creates a layer of informal accountability. This discourages misconduct and corruption at the grassroots level, as officers know they are being watched, and supported, by the very people they serve,” he added.
The minister also extended his gratitude to the Gurdwara Sahib Polis High Street committee for their dedicated efforts in maintaining the historic site.
