Hardship is probably the greatest educator of all, I know it’s easy to say so while remaining seated on the pedestal of privilege, but those who actually go through the struggle of earning every morsel, those who don’t have the luxury of taking life for granted, also corroborate to this bitter truth. Reza Rahadian takes no sentimental approach to hammer this realization into the mind of the viewers with his 2025 Indonesian drama, “Pangku” aka “On Your Lap”. A brilliant, moving narrative focusing on themes of survival, broken dreams, aspirations and resilience of human spirit, “On Your Lap” has a universal tone and appeal of its own. While duly supporting the direction and performance, the deft cinematography captures suburban decadence with all its misery and haunting beauty.

Sartika’s Life At Maya’s ShopSet in the late 90s in Indonesia, particularly opening in the economically, politically turbulent 1997-98, “On Your Lap” highlights the contemporary dismal state of the country where the poor have found themselves burdened by a system which only marginalizes them even further. Amidst the downtrodden, few are able to escape their situation by settling abroad as laborers, domestic help – even at the cost of despicable treatment of immigrants. Those who aren’t that lucky, are bound to do whatever it takes to survive. The movie opens with a focus on a heavily pregnant Sartika, who is trying to find a stable footing after escaping an unknown, troubled past. We never get to know what happened with Sartika, or why isn’t she willing to share her familial connection or the father of her unborn child, but her desperation can be ascertained from the fact that she has hitchhiked a ride by asking help from truckers, one of whom is giving lecherous side eye. The elder trucker, assuming possible danger of bringing along a rootless, pregnant woman, decides to ditch Sartika in the middle of nowhere in the Pantura district. The younger trucker guides Sartika to a relatively busier area where she can find job opportunities, which appears to be a couple of karaoke bars where women provide carnal service in exchange for money. It can be assessed that Sartika has gone through a lot as despite being in a completely alien environment, she doesn’t let her vulnerable side be seen once and makes her way towards the end of the road.
She comes across Maya’s dingy coffee shop – the kind which are generally known as Kopi Pangku, where female servers try to win over male patrons by sitting on their lap, and seek monetary favors in exchange for pleasing them. An elderly Maya has to resort to this trade after her husband, Jaya, lost his job in the plastic factory. In her desperation to find a source of income, Sartika asks Maya for help and agrees to do whatever is needed for survival. Maya shows her kindness by inviting Sartika at her place to stay, and gets some vague answers about her past life. Maya offers Sartika to work at her shop, but she hesitates as she isn’t comfortable with the idea of having to commoditize herself by pleasing male patrons. At Maya’s shabby hut, Sartika gives birth to her son, Bayu. For a while, she works in the rice field along with Jaya. However, after a certain point, Sartika realizes this isn’t going to cut it, and despite having her reservations, she agrees to act as a server in Maya’s shop. Sartika wants to provide a better future for her son, and to do so she is prepared to sacrifice her modesty if need be. Given the destabilized state of the economy and abject government negligence, people like Maya, Sartika have no choice except to make a living by any means available.
Why Did Maya Choose Hadi As Her Husband?Years pass, Sartika’s presence has made Maya’s shop more crowded, and she has become efficient at her job. Bayu has grown up, and Sartika has been saving up to provide for his education and future. Maya and Jaya have accepted Sartika and Bayu as part of their family. At the same time, the grim reality of her situation has not escaped Sartika’s mind; even as a kid, Bayu realizes her mother’s job is not something respectable and she has been forced to do it. Naturally, he wishes to earn money on his own so that his mother doesn’t have to work any longer, and Sartika reminds him that in order to do so, he must keep his focus on getting proper education. On one occasion, a fish supplier, Hadi, visits the shop with his assistant, Asep, and after meeting Sartika for the very first time, he takes a liking to her. Before leaving, Hadi has fish delivered to Sartika, and even provides tips to Maya to hand it over to Bayu. Soon enough, Hadi returns for a second time, and adhering to Bayu’s request, provides fish once again. Kindness is hard to come by, especially for people like Sartika at such a period, and Maya allows her to entertain the possibility that Sartika might secure a better future with a man like him. Hadi acts respectable towards Sartika, is in a better financial position and Maya believes he is single. It is not unconventional for people from Sartika’s status to wish for a better future by getting together with someone respectable and financially stable.
As Sartika takes Bayu to get admitted to the school, she faces a troubling situation when the administrators ask her for the identity of Bayu’s father which is more important than that of mothers when it comes to getting diplomas. Aside from this gender bias inherent in such a requirement which is still prevalent in the educational sector, recalling the identity of Bayu’s father is a sensitive topic for Sartika. She is crestfallen, and lack of paternal identity affects young Bayu’s mind as well. Gilang, a teenager who works in the same fishery where Hadi works, puts the idea in Bayu’s mind to consider Hadi as his father. During Hadi’s next visit, an innocent Bayu ends up asking him whether he is indeed his father, and he brings up the topic during his conversation with Sartika. She realizes Hadi isn’t offended by the question, and in fact, he shows his interest in Sartika’s life. Hadi takes Sartika and Bayu on an outing, and Sartika finally opens up to him upon realizing Hadi is a responsible individual. Their bond grows stronger fast and at one point, Hadi motivates Sartika to take up her father’s profession by running a noodle cart and giving up on her current profession. He offers her monetary assistance, and after learning the difficulty regarding Bayu’s school admission, he offers to take care of the situation. With Hadi, Sartika dares to dream for a new life, one which will provide her more agency and she won’t have to feel a burden to anyone. She has genuinely fallen in love with him, and accepts his proposal to become committed.
Sartika gets married to Hadi, and along with Bayu, moves out of Maya’s hut. An emotionally heavy moment follows as the elderly couple had formed a strong familial connection with them. Hadi brings Sartika and Hadi to a new home, where they can now have their new beginnings and seek opportunities for the future. Hadi arranges necessary documents for Bayu and Sartika and admits Bayu to the school, together the father-son duo start to make a noodle cart which Sartika will use to earn a living. On the other hand, Maya’s shop faces a slump after Sartika moves away, but the old woman seems to have made peace with that. Even before Sartika arrived she had to tend to her family, and she can do the same after she has gone.
Why Did Sartika Return to Maya?Sartika’s fairy-tale-like new life enters a rough patch when Hadi doesn’t return for quite a while, and she finds out that she is pregnant with his child. Sartika feels at a loss in suddenly changed circumstances, and even though Maya advises her not to overthink, she is overwhelmed by a feeling of abandonment. A young Bayu knows how terribly Sartika is suffering in absence of his father, tries his best to help her by handing over whatever savings he has made by selling kites made by Gilang. Sartika learns from Bayu that Gilang knows Hadi’s employer, who can share his whereabouts, and she asks him to lead her to the employer. Sartika’s dreams shatter in an instant after she learns about Hadi’s secret. As it turns out, Hadi is married, and his wife earns a living in Saudi Arabia. He has used her savings to provide for Sartika and Bayu’s future, without ever mentioning about his other life. Sartika left her sordid past in search of hope, only to realize her life has dragged her back to a similarly hopeless situation. Maya consoles Sartika, assuring her that she and Bayu will always have a place at her hut.
Not long after this, Hadi’s wife, Anissa arrives at Sartika’s place, and expresses her shock upon seeing how her promiscuous husband has spent her hard earned money. She laments for Sartika’s fate, mentioning she expected to see her in a better condition. Humiliated, dejected Sartika packs up, takes Bayu, and drags the unfinished noodle cart back to Maya’s place without uttering a word to Hadi – who continues to watch helplessly. Unlike him, Sartika has self respect, and she can not accept charity by becoming a replacement for someone else. Poor Bayu’s confused, disheartened gaze tells you everything one needs to know about broken dreams and empty promises.
What Happened to Sartika and Bayu?Maya and Jaya welcome Sartika and Bayu with warmth, but Sartika once again has to return to her old profession of Kopi Pangku server. However, one night, Jaya surprises Sartika by finishing the making of the noodle cart, and this gesture conveys that they respect her decision and want her to take the next step of her life, which is becoming financially independent. Life has taught a harsh lesson to Sartika about shaping her fate in her own hands, but it has also blessed her by bringing people like Maya and Jaya who stood by her in the worst phase of her life.
The narrative shifts to several years later, after Maya and Jaya’s passing – Sartika’s noodle cart business has allowed her to gain a strong footing. Bayu has grown up and Sekar, Sartika’s daughter with Hadi, has been admitted to school. Letting his mother to rest for a day, Sekar takes the noodle cart to the set shop, and leaves a letter for Sartika. The letter, read from the perspective of a young Bayu, reveals his heartfelt gratitude towards his mother for the lifelong sacrifices she made, the burdens she carried on her shoulder to ensure he and Sekar have a safer, brighter future. Knowing everything his mother has been through, Bayu now knows what an indomitable spirit she has, and he acknowledges how proud he, and his late grandparents, Jaya and Maya are of her. Bayu has offered his savings to Sartika, asking her to buy whatever she likes, and is ready to take the responsibilities of her business on his shoulders. As Sartika reads the letter, her eyes tear up with joy – having raised an understanding, sympathetic man, what more can a mother ask for anyway. She looks at the photograph of her family – Jaya and Maya together present with her and Bayu, with immense joy, knowing life has not been easy with everything that she has gone through, but the people close to her have brought her much needed peace and comfort in time of need.
